power steering

Ok...noticed my steering has a slight "pulse" when sitting with the steering wheel turned a bit for a turn...wondering if that might be the cause for a bit of wandering and imprecise steering on curves...seems to need correcting while going around curves.. It's like the pump has a pulse to it...doesn't provide a steady pressure to the steering gear., but steering is not stiff or tight. Any ideas? Thx! Oops..edit... 1984 f250 6.9idi t-19 2wd.

Check the belt. Make sure it's not cracked or missing pieces and that it's tight. Also make sure it's on the correct pulley on the engine. This is easier to get mixed than you think, and can be difficult to figure out which groove it's supposed to be in. That's because these diesels use such long belts, it's easy to get them mixed up and they will still sort of work.

Probably goes without saying, but did you make sure the fluid level is topped off?

I'm thinking the power steering pump is not the cause of any wandering. That's probably in the front end steering parts.
