New steering stabilizer - need a recommendation please
I am in the process of putting all new hoses in place for my power steering, (thanks for all the advice on a previous post) and I determined that I should also put in a new steering stabilizer as mine appears to be beyond worn out. I have a 1977 f250 4x4 on some crappy 35" tires that will be replaced sooner than later. Any suggestions on which one to get?
When you say steering stabilizer, are you talking about the power assist ram?
Sorry I don't remember seeing a pic of your system.
Edit: I think I'm getting you mixed up with another since you have a '77.
I am calling it a steering stabilizer. Maybe it is a steering dampener??? It looks like a shock but has 2 power steering hoses going to it from my pump. I'm still figuring it all out.

That is the hydraulic ram for your steering. It's not a steering dampner.
That hydraulic ram is the part that gives you power steering.
IIRC even in '77 you have a regular manual steering gear that is assisted by the ram which is powered by the pump.
Does the ram leak fluid?
Good to know on the terminology. I will look up that part description so I can figure out what it does
No the ram does not leak at all. Just getting those new hoses and previous lines had some fancy bent metal lines running the link of the frame that I am doing away with for new hoses end to end. the guy I'm working with suggested I make sure I don't want to replace the hydraulic ram first just in case the fittings on the new ram would be different from older ram. I think it is ok so maybe it will just proceed with my new hoses.
Hell I'm the most ignorant person here, so no sweat.
That's great that your ram doesn't leak. They are a PITA to fix.
How 'bout posting some pics of your truck and the work you are doing.
We're very visual here (mostly out of ignorance).
Good luck.
Those rams are obsolete. Finding rebuild kits are hard to find. I think Lare's Corp. can rebuild them. I know a guy that has a NOS ram for sale, but he wants an arm and a leg for it. He also has a used one with the rebuild kits for it and he only wants a leg for that one.
