I don't run a cat. My truck is over 25 years old so I took it out (no emissions testing in Texas for >25 YOA vehicles). The OEM cat is a big, ugly thing.
If your engine is not modified quite a bit, you don't need a "high-flow" cat IMO. I am not sure they could prove they flow any more than OEM in any case. Mostly you are just getting a new, clean cat.
I don't need emissions on my truck either, but I figured I'd at least do what I could to keep it legal without spending too much. It's kind of looking like I'll just go for the cat delete.

Poke a steel rod thru the cat to open it up, but leave it on the truck so that it looks like it is still doing it's job. Mine does not have to be emission tested either, but it has to have all of that stuff on the truck, APPEARING to be working.
That's an option. The main thing is that I'm doing a cat-back exhaust, upgrading to 3", which even with a gutted cat, it'd still be the bottleneck. Although it'd probably flow much better once gutted so it might be a solid interim solution until I dump the extra money into a high flow or decide to just cut it out. Mostly I'm just a pansy that doesn't want to get that super rare, but super expensive ticket for no cat.
I don't get tested anymore, but I've actually added cats to my older trucks with swapped-in EFI just to clean up the exhaust. I'm not worried about that last couple of horsepower, so a cat is a no-brainer for me.
I used Magnaflow brand high-flow cats, but I can't tell you anymore how much they cost. But using $100 bucks as your max outlay is going to limit you drastically I would expect. Unless someone has an unused one on Craigslist they no longer need, I can't imagine many cats for less than $100.
Not sure what they go for these days, but I'd still get one even if they were more than that. And I'm still always on a tight budget.
Good luck. But look on Craigslist and the for-sale forums hereabouts too. Just in case someone did not finish their project.
~$118 USD plus tax/shipping. States it fits Chevy big blocks, should work on a Ford.
When I replaced the entire exhaust on my old 1992 F350 4x4 w/5.8L engine I used a Magnaflow 59929. No emission testing here, but I like to breathe clean air. At the time that converter was rated for a higher GVW, Magnaflow downgraded it a few years ago I noticed. The 99109HM may be the golden ticket you are looking for.

Same here. I was surprised at the improved smell on my '68.
When the '98 Explorer engine was installed, still 100% stock right down to the exhaust manifolds and EGR setup, it actually put out a surprisingly nasty exhaust smell.
Adding the cat took care of about 90% of that. Happier now for sure.
The '93 F150 actually smells surprisingly nasty right now too. Wonder if that means that the original cat has seen better days? Could also be a tired old air pump I suppose.
Going to replace the pump first, since I know it's in sad shape. If that doesn't do the job I'll replace the cat too.
Awesome, I went ahead and ordered the Magnaflow 99109 as well as the flange adapter from Bear River (https://www.bearriverconverters.stor...roduct-reviews) and should be able to do a full 3" exhaust from the manifold flange for under $350.
