I have seen where everyone has talked about IAC in the DOHC motors for the Explorer. Well I have a SOHC 4.0 Sport Trac and it ia having the idle problem too. I have looked under the hood to see if it had the IAC but I did not see it. I had a system scan done on it and it said that the number five cylinder was not fireing. Is ther something else that I can check to fix this problem? I did change the spark plug on number five but another scan shows the same result. Do I need to reset the CPU before I do a new check, or does it do it atomaticaly. It went through the same thing as some as you guys have had about it not starting in a driveway that is slanted and starting and then dying and also hard to start on cold morning. Its only got 54000 miles on it and I thaught that it would be trouble free a bit longer but I guess that's why they give you a 36000 mile warrentee instead of a 60000 mile one. Thanks in advanced for any help.
i have the same motor as you, and the IAC is right under plastic cover on the top of the motor. i had the idle problem, i replaced the IAC and it went away. but you do have one.
thanks crettis...didnt know it was located there. now about the scan that was performed on it...is there a reason why it would say that #5 is not fireing? is there a way to rest and try again?
My 2001 Sport Trac won't start on a hill either, but only if it is facing downhill. Look at your gas guage if you are having the same trouble. The gas guage, if its on a quarter tank or less, will go way past E when you're facing down. So I must assume it is a tank design flaw. Anyway, if I park uphill, I have no problem. I'm no mechanic, this is just my observations. By the way, my Sport Trac only has 27000 and mine idles rough too.
I read all the emails and such regarding some idoling problems with the 2001 Explorer Sport Trac. I have 140,000km on mine and I just bought it. I noticed today when I did a cold start after returning to my truck this afternoon that it kept stalling.
Now I was on a slight incline with a 1/4 of a tank of gas. As well, the weather was -12C (6F) outside.
Can anyone tell me whether or not a replacement IAC will be covered under a bumper to bumper warrenty? Also, could it be just that I had cheap gas (with water in it) in the tank?
It's not the gas, I thought that too and the dealer tried to tell me that when I took it in because it was idleing rough and didn't always start. They didn't fix anything (probably because it was under warranty) and I got stuck at work because the my truck wouldn't start. I had to get my truck towed. They finally replaced the IAC.
I would get your IAC fixed before you get stuck somewhere because it just randomly won't start. Along with my IAC problem they said something was wrong with my fuel management valve.
Before and after all this work, my truck still idles rough at 500 rpm. They told me it should run rough it's a truck. I don't believe that and I feel like I am getting the run around. I'm going to try to get it fixed one more time.
Does anyone know if it is routine to check/reset the idle when they replace the IAC? I'm pissed I have to take my truck back for this same idle problem even after they have done the IAC work on my truck.
