2018 F-250 Limited FX4. I don’t tow, but I do put about 600 miles/week on the truck, about 2/3 of those miles are unrestricted freeway travel @ 75MPH. Currently 40K on the truck.
About 5000 miles ago, I got a solitary P2002 CEL. Brought it in. CEL went off the AM I brought it in. DPF system checked out 100%. I did notice that the inside of my tailpipe had a thin coating of soot. Didn’t know enough to know that was abnormal. The air filter was dirty, which can be causal, so they replaced that, oil change, other stuff, and I went on my way.
Approaching 40K miles, CEL came back on. Same code. Brought it in after a few days - again, CEL went off morning I was bringing it in. They thought “bad sensor” advised to come in if it came on again. CEL came back on 4 days later - brought it in for oil/filter and this time they noticed the soot in the tailpipe and DPF failed “pinpoint testing.” So they are replacing the DPF under warranty, at 40K miles. They do not reset the DPF warranty etc.
This was an issue, evidently, on some 2017 models (TSB solo P2002 code). Wanted to let folks know that it happened to me. At this point would probably consider a delete with some type of quick reconnect in the future if there is such a thing. I prefer to do my part for emissions, but don’t want to spend $6K if this happens again in 40K more miles (which would place me outside of the 70K CA warranty requirement). They did tell me this is unusual - service advisor has seen this only a handful of times and has lots of non-towing high-mileage vehicles where DPF is just fine.
soot in the pipe is a symptom of a cracked Ceramics inside the DPF. Pretty rare nowadays.
hey senix, I found this on a search. you may recall I recently had a p2002 error, which I cleared with the IDash. However it happened 2 more times and I noticed soot in the exhaust tips. Also I have noticed egt3 going as high as 1300 deg f during regen. Probably all related.
I think I’ll head to the Ford dealer with this info. Only 13k miles on the truck.

1300 degrees is fine. 1500 can be catastrophic. Just adding info for anybody following. 👍

It’ll be a few weeks before I get it in there. It’s also interesting that recently it would regenerate before the soot load got to 80%... and mileage wasn’t even at 300. I have an outstanding recall that needs to be taken care of as well...something to do with carpet can catch on fire in the event of a wreck.
