Where is the best place to tie in reverse lights that i am hunting in the bumper? in the actual tail light or in one of the trailer plugs in the bumper? I am also going to wire them to an up fitter switch...do i tie that in between the light and the splice for when the truck is in reverse?
Many ways to wire aux reverse lights. If they draw much power (non-LED) you need to use a relay - probably best to energize the relay by the back-up light and then use the up-fitter switch to break the connection also. That way you can only get back-up lights with the truck in reverse (and the up-fitter switch on). Pretty easy to bump the overhead switch and it the reverse lights are not wired through the reverse circuit you could cause an accident or at least be on the hook for a ticket.
Do not wire through the trailer plug wires - the truck will always think you have a trailer attached.
I'm sure that with a search about up-fitter switch wiring, you will find some detained wiring set-ups for what you want.
IMO the best route is to hardwire them to an upfitter switch so they can be controlled independent of the reverse lights. There are times I want to reverse without the sun on behind me and there are times I want the lights out while in park.
Confirming you can splice into the reverse light wire
Hey fellas. Just confirming you can splice into the reverse light wire if you want on these newer ones? On my '11 or '16, I tried that, and subsequently learned that you could not do that due to some electrical thingies LOL...
