On my 2010 5.4L 3V engine I have a ticking noise that I can't seem to pinpoint the exact location. It currently sounds like it's coming from the center/back part of the engine and you can hear it clearly inside the cabin with the radio off and outside of the car with the hood down. This noise is present at all times including a cold start and normal operating conditions. The ticking frequency will increase when accelerating and speed up linearly with the rate of acceleration. It also doesn't seem to disappear until I hit high enough RPMs (2500+) where the engine or road noise drowns it out. I used a stethoscope near both cam phasers and I didn't hear any distinct thumping, nor along the rest of the cover. I've read up on some of the other threads mentioning cam phasers or exhaust manifolds but the symptoms don't seem to fully match up. Is this a noise that is normal for this engine? Could it just be noisy fuel injectors and I just started noticing them more? Overall, I'm a little confused about what is making this ticking noise and any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you.
I imagine the tick frequency matches engine RPM and not vehicle speed. That leaves you with an exhaust leak, a noisy fuel injector, or a collapsed valve lifter.

Sorry, I didn't explain that well. You are correct that it matches the engine RPM. I'm beginning to suspect it's the valve lifter based on everything I've read online so I'll probably take it into the shop to at least get a quote. Thanks!
I tried to drop it off today but they were too busy so I will bring it back Monday morning. Seems like it has only been evident to me for the last week or two so fingers crossed it's not too bad. Anyone have suggestions if it is a valve lifter should I just get the VCT solenoids replaced too while everything is open?
Looks to me that oil should be changed a bit more often. I am still one of those that go by the 3000 mile rule and yes I know that with todays oil and engines that it may be to often but then I had a little HHR with 277 thousand miles on it and oil was still clean. To me it is cheap insurance. Hope you problem is to bad as I have a 2014 5.0 and I know there has been a lot of talk on the ticking for that engine alsol
