Interesting. With a 97% survival rate, it amazes me how much of a panic everyone is in. Shutting down school for 2 months? Hope they still pay the teachers. And does this mean the kids lose their summer vacation of two months because they were off now for two months? Went to the store yesterday, and it was a mad house. You would think the "big one" was going to hit the way people are acting.
I have no clue when the corona-virus was first reported. All I know is that it finally hit Fresno County. Am I worried? No. First of all, nobody lives forever, second of all, even if I were to contract it, with a 97% chance of surviving it, I am sure I will be okay. Not like I never had the regular flu. I even survived two weeks of pneumonia (that was hell believe me) a few years back. And, I spend most my time indoors in my apartment anyway. Only leaving to go to the store. Do need to get toilet paper soon though, that might cause me to panic. LOL
Jim
You need to put in perspective. That 97% survival equates to 3% mortality. If that number is accurate, that's 30X the mortality of the flu. However, the stats I've seen (from the CDC) is that the mortality varies a lot with a person's age. Up to 6 years old, mortality is close to zero. 6-50 years old it's about .1% (similar to flu). 50-59 years old 1.3% (13X flu). 60-69 years old 3.6% (36X flu). 70-79 years old 8% (80X flu). 80-89 years old 14.8% (148X flu). So if you are in your 70s or 80s, you need to be very careful.
Oh, and the fatality rate is a lot higher for men than women; almost double. It's also worse if you are a smoker.
The virus has probably been here in the states for at least 6 weeks; maybe longer. We just have not been testing for it. Looks like we won't be testing for it for another week or two either.
In certain communities, it's Pestilence. They really believe it. Pestilence. Famine. War. Death.
Of course, I have also heard other disease referred to as Pestilence. Cancer. Aids. Plague. Rabies.
The world has always had war, famine, and death.
So if 4 Horsemen ride up to the White House, to take President Sanders away, I will have toilet paper. When President Trump brought KFC onboard Air Force 1, it was a sign that Colonel Sanders was prepping the White House for his older brother Bernie.
Not going to worry. Three percent is three percent. I will be 63 next month, never smoked, and rarely get out of the apartment as it is. My odds of contracting it are low, and if I were to contract it, I am sure I would survive, and if not, nobody lives forever, and I will be in a place with no diseases.
Well F@#$&! Northbound I-5 is closed at Lakehead for a multi vehicle accident including a big rig. It’s really ugly up there with snow and **** poor drivers.
Maybe I should just call in and take a mental health day tomorrow.
Happy Monday Nor Cal. I see the schools are finally closed here. I know this because I rode past one and no cars were in the teacher's parking lot, and when I went to the local Walmart Neighborhood market it was a zoo with adults and kids all over the place trying to find anything that was not already taken. I have never seen that store with so many bare shelves. LOL. They did have cases of water finally, but still no TP. No beef or chicken either. Even some of the frozen food shelves were bare. It is funny how people react to the media these days.
It's not just the media. All 6 Bay Area counties just issued a mandatory shelter in place order. Compliance is enforced by fine, jail time, or both. The order begins at midnight tonight and runs through April 7. There is a long list of exemptions (like grocery, medical supplies, medical services, etc.). Things like bars/taverns/wineries are considered non-essential and are ordered closed. Restaurants are allowed to serve take-out only.
It's not exactly "Marshall Law". I'm still going shopping for groceries. I'm still going to the gas station. I'm still going to the bank. Just no entertainment. No bars, movies, strip clubs, surfing, worship service, trying on Victoria's Secrets, sight seeing......Things like that. Malls will be closed, unless the food court remains open........ Every city will be limited to essential businesses.
If a cop stops you, you can always claim it is essential. You won't get shot on sight for getting a pack of smokes from the corner store. I would not recommend roller skating, in your hot pants, with a boom box, and claiming it's essential.

Happy Tuesday all. I never did own roller skates. When I was a kid I tried my mom's pair out and fell flat on my caboose. So I gave up before I hurt something else. LOL
With a white truck, and a green jacket with reflective stripes, I look official. Official enough that cops have not bothered me. I'm still out & about. Problem is, there's really no place to go. I'm not paying for restaurant food in a styrofoam box. The bath houses are closed, despite the argument that it's cultural.
Grocery stores are open, so I made my own dinner tonight. Instant ramen. Just like living in a dorm room. I boil it without that seasoning package, then rinse in cold water as the noodles are al-dente. Then I give it a quick toss in a hot pan with sesame oil, soy sauce, and red pepper flakes. It's topped off with poached eggs, and sprinkled with fresh cut herbs..
Santa Clara County is releasing inmates from jail. We don't want a bunch of incarcerated persons dying en masse. They will all be out in time to enjoy President Trump's free money: an idea stolen from Andrew Yang. Does that put Andrew Yang back in the race?
Be careful, with all of the freed criminals roaming our streets. Jim, you should start carrying that handgun.
It's going to get bad. Really bad. Everyone in the restaurant industry works paycheck to paycheck and they're not going to pay rent. Estimates are that the unemployment rate is going to go from about 4% to 20% in short order. I hope to hell I keep my job.
I've been getting used to packing heat when I go outside to get wood for the fire.
