Was plugged in like 3 hours, decided to start with no glowplugs(i have manual GPs).
Starter spinning maybe 5 secs nothing, then power to glow plugs maybe 5 secs and BAM!
205cc/80% injectors.
I have experienced small puffs with stock injectors in this van but never anything like this,in any vehicle.
Does the soot look like small solid flakes, or confetti?
I get this on my stock 7.3 on colder start ups, say in the 40's (F) or lower.
While letting it idle sometimes it will blow that confetti soot, not always, but in the colder temps. Seems to be either once the turbo starts spinning, and or the EBV opens.
Nothing like that, I'd say like a handful of confetti is all I get. In addition I never have un-burned soot while normal or hard driving too.
I figured out where I've seen that before...years ago cars and trucks used to have chokes on them and when you first started them up in the winter and there was snow on the ground that would happen. Does it improve or stop altogether if you exercise your glow plugs well before startup?
Every once in a while mine will shoot out some moisture laden soot when starting, I think it is just moisture laden soot that collects in the exhaust then gets blown out.
Oh, so you hit the afterburners, now it's sinking in. It sounds like the engine was running when you did that? If so that kind of surprises me. Even if it wasn't running that kind of surprises me too. And, yes, GP's get plenty hot enough to light #2 fuel oil, check youtube for videos on them, they get a lot hotter than you would expect. At least some smoker grills use them for their igniters.
If I crank on mine in the cold without waiting for the GP's and it doesn't start then turn the key on they will ignite the fuel and make a pop in there. One day I'm going to get my GoPro out and video it for yas.
Yes,i know how GP system works in a 7.3
I have manual GPs,i activate them after start sometimes to smoothen it out.
It shooted that crap while activating GPs,no starting, engine not running.
Ok now I get what you are saying, Ive had that happen to me on my obs when some of my GP were not working correctly.
From my understanding and from my conclusion, the cylinders that don't ignite the fuel when being cranked, still have atomized fuel lingering in the cylinder bore and if that piston is @TDC the glow plug ignites the atomized fuel without ever being cranked thus the backfire. But my truck never threw anything from the exhaust as yours did.
