99' Explorer Sport - Engine/Electrical problems... HELP!!!
I bought a used 99 Explorer Sport a few months ago, and here are some "problems" that I've encountered with it along the way... Please let me know if any of you can help in figuring out these problems!!!
"Rough Idle/driving" = I can feel a slight hesitation, or loping in the truck when it's at idle, and when I am driving it... doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold... it seems as though it wants to change gears a bit too early too...
"Cold Start" = When starting it in the morning, it'll cuts off almost immediately... unless I keep my foot on the accelorator just a bit.
"Radio/CD Player" = The radio will only change stations/functions when the headlights/parking lights are off... when the lights are turned on, it flips back to the programmed radio channel #2, and you can't change the station/functions anymore... Although, it will work properly from the rear console... What's up with that?
What types of problems are most likely associated with these symptoms??? PLEASE HELP!!!
The rough idle and cold start problems sound like a dirty IAC (idle air control). Try cleaning it first; if that dosen't help, a replacement is about $70. Takes 2 minutes to change.
I checked the IAC, and it was fairly clean. It had a little carbon deposit in there, so i cleaned it out with electrical cleaner. Still didn't help - Does this mean it needs replacing, or could it very well be something else...?
Yes, replace the IAC with a brand new one. You can find them at most dealer parts depts for about $80 or order one online somewhere cheaper but wait for it to be sent.
The radio sounds like theres a short or a ground somewhere. Check all the wiring for breaks or pinches. That may take some time but its worth it in the long run.
(BTW. the IAC is right under the plastic engine cover...cant miss it)
