I have a 1986 F700 4x4 fire truck With a gas motor and standard transmission. It currently has the 9.00-20 aggressive mud tires but the front end just can’t stay afloat in slick/ muddy situation. This is a personal truck used for controlled burning in the spring and I would really like to upgrade to some sort of super single wheel and tire combo without breaking the bank.... possibly some type of military tire. The wheels currently on it are the 6 hole lug style with the locking ring. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
The 2 1/2 ton army trucks with singles were 11.00x 20 ( I think) I checked into that for my 78 F 600 4x4 & the front & rear wheels were not going to track. These were on the GMC 2 1/2 ton version. Don't know if the the Reo, Kaiser, AM General versions had different rims than the GMC. Stockton Wheel might have something.
good hunting
Super singles are usually a lower profile tire, and if you search you will find a battle of sorts as to how well they work. Some good, some curse them. They are expensive as you are looking at a different wheel as well.
If you can find 11.00s and your gearing will allow you to pull them, that might be a cheap way to go. We had a GMC M135 on the farm. It had 9.00s and "3 wheel" drive. When it got stuck, it was STUCK. But the info plate in the cab suggested running the tires down to 15 psi for cross country travel.
So 11.00s at 20-25 psi would give you a much bigger footprint. Do you have a compressor or could you mount one so you could air up when returning to the road?
NDT military treads are noted for liking to slide sideways and for digging holes. Other than that.....

I looked around for some of these wheels and it looks like they made several different options in military wheels to run the wider tires. But one place I called thought the offset from military rims would get into the Ford front leaf springs. Thank you for the suggestion.

I spoke to a local shop that claims they can make a solid 22.5 wheel that’s 12in wide to run a 385 radial supper single radial. Wheels would cost $400 each and then take off tire prices...? I didn’t think any 22.5 would be aggressive enough for true off road use.
The tires on it now are around 40in tall... I’m not sure on the 11.00-20 if that would bog the motor/ gearing down to much and cause issues. I like the idea of running pressure down for more footprint but in my novice mind I was thinking I needed to get 12-15 inch wide tires to float more but I may be completely wrong here. My rig doesn’t have air on board but it wouldn’t be to expensive to add and it’s a good idea for sure. Can you run a split rim that low without causing trouble? They are tubed bias ply tires now.
Try Bobby at Gensco Tires/Houston 770 519-1911, see what he can dig up...ag or military surplus
They have new/used for just about everything off-road, probably have something either to fit your 20" wheels, or a whole different setup.
Look for M35A3 super single wheels. 20" diameter, 10" wide, 2 piece o-ring design. You can run 335R80-20 (12.5x20) tires. They're 40" tall (same height as the 9.00x20), 12" wide.
