Glow Plug Relay Problems

Howdy,
I have a 2002 7.3l pickup with a factory tune. I have been having a difficult time starting in the cold, so I replaced the old glow plugs, but still no start. When I hook a voltmeter to the relay, I can see it has juice to both the control and glow plug circuits but it isnt sending power to the plugs. When I unhook the relay and connect it directly to the battery it works fine. The voltage at the control circuit terminals is about 11.5 VDC. Is there something wrong with the control circuit?
Sam,

The tune a chip in the pcm or plugged into the OBD...if so, remove it and try firing up

If you haven’t replaced the GP relay, it sounds like it needs replaced.

If you jump the 2 big terminals on the relay with an old screwdriver or similar for 30secs - does the truck start?

The GPR is the smaller of the 2 relays and sits behind the larger AIH relay.

With 12 volts here with key on......the.....

12 volts here will go to 0 volts....If it does not go to 0 volts, replace the glow plug relay. This may not be the only reason your truck is not starting, but you need to get this part in working order.

An expensive relay/solenoid that does not fit well in our trucks....

I’ve recently installed a couple of Trombetta relays that are OEM fit and only $25 shipped. That is all I’ll use from now on.

I bought them from here because I usually have money in PayPal. Someone recently posted a link on amazon for a couple $$ less.

This one does not come with nuts for the big terminals and they are different than nuts on stock GPR.

@SkySkiJason , I just noticed that the Trombetta relay you linked from eBay is part number 684-1241-212-06 and the relay @KubotaOrange76 linked in his original post is part number 684-1241-212-02. I believe the last series of numbers is often just a revision or updated part number for the same part, but "maybe" the -06 does not include the nuts for the posts and the -02 does include the nuts for the posts.

Looking at the
link to Amazon link to Amazon
that Chris (KubotaOrange76) posted in his thread linked above, I am unable to see the -02 or -06 in either the description or the image of the actual relay. Although, if the Amazon link is in fact where Chris bought the -02 from (maybe he can tell us for sure) then perhaps that will include the nuts for the relay.

In addition, this Trombetta relay is on my list for a GPR replacement. I never liked the way the Stancor was mounted in the small space or had to be relocated due to it's size.
