ECT coolant temp sensor- how to?

I know it's located on the very back of the block above the starter, but what is the best procedure for getting to it? I've heard driving it up on ramps and going from underneath may work. Can I fit a voltmeter in there to test it first? Just wondering how to tackle this one. Thanks.

remove the wire from the engine coolant temp sensor.
switch your ignition key to the on position, without turning the truck on.
your gauge should read cold.
now, using a jumper wire, ground the coolant temp sensor wire.
your gauge needle should point to hot or past hot.

if your gauge operates as described, replace the Coolant temp sensor.

if your gauge does not perform as described, it may be the gauge itself or the wiring.

Good luck

Thanks Motorhead, I did do that procedure you described as outlined by the Haynes.

1) disconnected neg battery 2) unbolted starter and set on exhaust 3) reached up side of block with 11/16" wrench and took it out 4) small amount of coolant splashed but I put new unit with teflon back in and it works!

Bad location but you can fit a hand easily up the side of the block. I set a halogen light near the side of the motor so it lit up the area a bit.
