This is on a 2012 F-250 6.7L 4x4. Probably a simple question, but after removing everything to replace this I'm having a bit of a difficult time figuring it out.
It seems like the axle seal would have to spin somewhere to make up for the axle rotating in the solid housing but the seals seems to be fixed. Is it just very tight when new? Does the outer part of the seal spin and the inner remain fixed? Does the whole seal spin around inside of the kunckle and just use the rubber to seal against the knuckle?
My seal set tool also seems to be stock on the axle after installing the seal. Any tips on separating the two? It started getting late on me so I didn't try very many things to separate them yet, but it seems like it shouldn't be so difficult.
I think the error is in calling that troublesome piece of rubber a seal...it is a shield. Maybe Ford changed it, but on my older trucks the shield was fixed in on the axle and rides on the front edge of the tube. There is an updated seal for the D60, which is fit in to the tube and stretches over the axle...and rotates with the axle assembly.
