Hi! I have a 1970 F100, and it seems to have a voltage drop between the battery and the fuse block.
With the engine not running, I have 12.6v at the battery, but only 10.2v at the hot-when-on lug.
Can anyone please tell me what could cause this drop? I realize there are probably a lot of possibilities, I just need a good starting place.
That sounds a little like the ballast wire or resistor in play. What does it measure when running?
To be honest, I haven't been able to start it the past couple days.
That lug powers the hei dizzy, so I'm not getting 12v to the coil. It was recommended by the manufacturer to not use the existing 12v to the coil due to a voltage increase on startup.
OK, maybe you know this already, the ballast or "pink wire" resistor is incorporated into the wiring harness on Fords. It's connected to the ignition switch with a bullet connector, runs under the dash, and then into a splice, by the time it exits the firewall and terminates at the solenoid starter relay it's just reg'lar wire. So I'm guessing here, but I think what needs to happen is you want to disconnect and/or bypass the resistor wire.
