Hub noise

Ok so I have a rattling sound from front left wheel. Sometimes it bumps and stops making the noise.
I am guessing drive shaft is trying to engage for some reason in 2wd and falls in?

Truck drives fine and 4x4 works. just wondering if anyone has ideas what part is worn out.
It's a 1994. Theres no hub locks and a manual 4x4 shifter. Does this mean its vacuum hubs? Or is it always engaged to the drive shafts ?

Disassemble that hub, they're automatic and known to fail. Most likely when you take the cap off there will be a bunch of bb's in there.

If I take the caps off and inspect, and bbs or whatever else falls out, will I still be able to drive it after if I need to order parts?
I'll need to go do it in a friends heated shop.

These are vaccum hubs right?
the trucks I had before were a 2002 7.3 and 2008 6.4 and both were the same front axle and were different than this 1994

no not vacuum on the 94 unless someone changed something

Axle rotation is what locks em

I believe you can run it in RWD with the assemblies removed.
providing this is what you have... there is a 3 screw and a 5 screw version... I don't know what all configurations and years used.. my 4X4 knowledge is mostly on jeep and subaru.

You can run with them removed, if they're bad you'll need a manual conversion hub set and possibly a lock nut set.

If you have hex nuts they'll have to be changed, if they are the four inset prongs you can reuse them. Get em nice and tight by hand only. An impact will break the nuts and possibly bugger the threads on the spindle

Best thing is convert to Warn manual hubs which are trouble free. If you have the regular automatics, you can't disengage them without coming to a stop, then backing up a minimum of 15' so it's no more trouble to stop, get out and manually disengage the Warn hubs. With the Warn's you can still float the throttle and engage or disengage 4WD at any speed after the hubs are locked in.
