I just bought this truck a few months ago, the engine light came on, stopped at a local auto zone, unfortunately this was on a Sunday night. This code came up and it said to replace the diesel exhaust reductant fluid. I never heard of changing the Def fluid. Does this sound correct or does it need a trip to the dealer????? Thanks
I don’t currently own a diesel and never have so someone please correct me if I am wrong ... DEF is a consumable fluid, it needs to be refilled (not changed) every so often, 5k miles or so maybe.
It's 3/4 full of Def fluid. I never heard of changing it on any of my trucks, company or personal. But if that's all it's going to take to fix the problem, I would definitely try it.
I heard that DEF fluid can get stale.. may been sitting on shelves for months or longer. I also heard some guys buy their DEF at truck stops. Im gussing at a truck stop it is pumped like fuel??
P20EE is a generic OBD code meaning the PCM is seeing an issue with the NOx reduction system not working as it should so it could be anything from a bad sensor, exhaust leak, bad SCR injector, bad DEF, etc... The fill or replace DEF fluid looks like it is just included in a list of recommended maintenance at 40k miles.
Edit: Did not see it up at the top as well. I guess that is the computers best guess as to where to start. DEF can go bad if left to sit but it would take a good bit. It is mostly water but if that evaporates off it can mess with the concentration. Also someone could have put something in the tank they shouldn't have and it is just now causing problems.
