do you remember if the distributor in the 89 150 was a 302(5.0) or was it a 351w(5.8), 302's are 1" shorter, than the 351w
Hmm I put the shafts right next to each other and they were the same length. I believe I pulled it from a 302 but the 89 intake manifolds aren't stamped with 5.8 or 5.0 like the 90s ones are so I didn't look too much into it. There's a chance I could have grabbed it from a 5.8.
Maybe that has something to do with it though. I ended up swapping the entire shaft over so I got the distributor in, I just hope the pickup coil works properly. I'm not sure how it operates so it may have nothing to do with that spiral groove in the old shaft.
Another seperate issue is that the wiring I pulled from the 89 Bronco doesn't match up to the rear wiring harness ( brake lights/fuel pump etc I'd image) on my 88 f150. The front end, computer, all and engine all line up and work perfect, but I have to alter the connectors for the wiring that goes to the rear of the vehicle.
The Bronco wiring has roughly 5 oval connectors that would connect to the rear wiring, while the f150 has two large rectangular connectors. (And then one additional small rectangular connector with blue wiring)
I know this is normally a bad practice, but does anyone know if the wire colors match up between those years and f150/Bronco?
I'd like to see if I can get a wiring diagram for the 89 Bronco and one for the 88 f150 anyways so I can de-pin the Bronco wires and put them into the spare rectangular connectors I have from the old(bad) harness, but colors matching up would sure help speed things up. I'd like to verify anything before going too hard into it though.
I imagine the Bronco will have a rear defrost wiring the f150 won't have, and the f150 will have the dual tank wiring the Bronco wouldn't. So I'll have to try and find that too.

Yeah the 5.0 uses a smaller oil pump drive and the hole in the block where the distributor body seats is also smaller so the whole thing would wobble around and not seal in use in a 5.8, so you need to be sure you have a 5.8 distributor.

Dang.. well that makes sense. I put the older (5.0) distributor in with the other shaft. I'll tear it down again and reassemble it right this time! I'll take the 5.8 distributor housing and drill the holes to attach the pickup coil from the 5.0 distributor and also attach the TFI module to it as well, then put the shaft and gear back in it. It shouldn't be too bad since it seems to be machined the same, just without the holes.
For my wiring for the rear of the truck, I may just take my old harness that has the correct plugs and trace those to the connectors. I might unpin them from there and just Label what goes where.
I'll reference those diagram posted for the Bronco's wiring as well, but I think I should use the old harness as my baseline since that's what would normally be there!
