Harmonic Balancer: Good or Bad?

I'n in the process of having an engine re-built (1972 F250 390) and as I was looking at my parts I looked closer at this harmonic balancer and was wondering if I should get a new one (pictures below)? I put a coat of paint on it but its got a few cracks. I found a new one on ebay that looks identical. https://www.ebay.com/itm/FORD-360-39...E/173970023974

Would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks for the help.

Some people don't mind using them with the rubber showing age like that. I, personally, would rather not as I have seen them come apart on more than one occasion. You probably can buy a brand new one for less than rebuilding the old one. Check Rockauto.

Its junk, replace it and make sure the new one is given to the rebuild for rotating assembly balancing.

Ya, way past its "Best By" date. Make sure not to just buy another one that "looks" OK that is just as bad as that one or worse. The "Damper Dudes" .com can rebuild them, bonding new rubber. Or just buy a rebuilt one if they have in stock and core the defective unit.

Here's who you want (IMHO), he'll rebuild it good as new!

To perform the damping function, the rubber must be pliable to allow the outer ring to move. Old hard rubber will highly degrade damping capability. Replace or rebuild.

I kind of enjoy learning stuff like this, admitting I'm weird. I knew the heavy damper ring could slip and mess up the timing, but didn't realize that the vibration absorbing also went away if they get crusty. The steel ring launching itself through the radiator is possible, but then so are crankshaft cracks or even breaking in half. I don't know how common that would be.

A crankshaft will have a resonance point at a specific RPM, and at multiples (or harmonics) of that RPM, that's what the damper does, absorbing torsional vibration by leading and lagging upon acceleration and deceleration. Some engine families don't have dampers, maybe they are balanced differently?

This is 1968/76 (D5TZ-6316-D replaced C8AZ-6316-B & D2TZ-6316-A), 1958/67 is different.
