Stock 88 Ford Bronco, right now there is no muffler, and stock exhaust back to the cat(one cat instead of the orginal 2). Is there a way I can get MORE SOUND out of the ole girl??? Even if I have to technically break something and then fix it when emissions testing time comes??????? I don't have money for headers so those are out. My thought was to go in front of the cat and drill some large holes, I think that would make it louder but I don't know if it will or not or if it will hurt anything and I don't know how legal it would be, then I could patch those before testing time(next Sept.). So any thoughts on a cheap way to get MORE SOUND????
Thanks
well if your state is like mine all you need to have in order to pass inspection is the physical cat in place, it doesn’t have to work... so this is what i would do... go down to the parts store and get some exhaust pipe that just barely fits inside the stock pipe and is a couple inches longer then each cat and also get some connectors because you are going to be cutting your pipe. Then cut your pipe next to each cat, drill out the cats and get all that crap out. Then take that pipe that will just barely fit in and shove that into the cat and make sure it goes in the hole in the other side so it makes it a nice straight passage. Then do the other side and reconnect your pipe, and test her out.
Ok this sounds like a easy home project, but I have a few questions.
I had a cat cut out and then a new pipe welded on, and it looks as if from the end of the new pipe to the muffler, they just clamped it on and now the clamp has came loose and there is space at the bottom where you can see (and feel if the car is running) carbon deposits where the exhaust is comming out, and then if I have then window down comming into the car.
Im not 100% sure if it is loose, but all i know is that there is a gap at the bottom of the pipe. Ill have to take a closer look.
Now I really havent looked at it but it seems as if its really rusted and old. But im prety sure its only a year old. So what do i do here?
Here is a pic. The red is the 1st cata i think, it has some heat shield on it. Blue is the muffler, and black is pipeing
Could i some how take out the muffler by hand and use 1 pipe and 2 "pipe clamps" as mentioned above?
Adding a single 40 series flowmaster and a 2.5 inch exhaust pipe all the way back would be afordable even for the staunchest of cheapskates. $72.95 for the muffler. I am sure a shop can do the rest for another $50. Or you can go hooker Aero Chamber muffler $57.95 plus install.
drilling holes is a crapshoot and would do more harm than good.
Order the muffler from summit and have a local shop weld it in along with a
tail pipe at least 2.5 inches in diameter and the tip of your choice.
I would get the delta flow 40 series. flowmaster has stoped production on the regular 40 series. The delta flows are better, they make it so the sound comes out the pipe and less can be heard inside the car.
It kind of depends on personal preference. I would personally go with the original 40 series Flowmaster over the Delta Flow. It all depends on how much you want to be able to hear it. I have the original 40 series and still wish it was a bit louder. Your best bet, performance wise, would probably be to go with a single in, single out 3" Flowmaster 40 series with 3" pipe all the way out to the stock location. Or if you want the dual look you can do what I have and get the 3" in, 2.5" dual out muffler, part number: FLO-430402 and exit to the sides behind the rear tires.

Here in Ohio the cat has to be installed and also WORK. If I go with a 3" pipes and 40 series muffler system from the cat back will it provide much more sound??? I would like to be able to hear the sound in the cab also. I don't know the legality of it, but I have seen in the summit book one time a valve that could be welded infront of the cat. You could open the valve for the full sound of the engine(bypassing the cat and any mufflers) or close the valve and it all goes through the cat and muffler system, has any one used one of these are even heard of them?? LIke I said the more sound the better. Right now the exhaust comes right out the back of the cat, no tailpipe and no muffler, it sounds OK but the more the better. One reason for making it as cheap as possible is if I get stopped by the cops and I have to change it I won't have too much money wrapped up in it(not to mention I don't have that much money to begin with). Here is the bypass valve from Summit Racing that you can use to bypass your muffler and cat.
Well I guess that won't work then Sitting here I am not sure how much space I have between the cat and O-2 sensor, but could I hack off the cat, put on a glasspack and then when emissions time comes(or the cops get me for being too loud) bolt the cat back on???? or does the cat have to be welded????
Or could I get a junk cat and hollow it out, put a strait pipe in it and throw it on there with a glass pack, but do you think I could pass emissions testing with no cat?? I don't think I would
