Before I bought my 90 F150 I had an 89 Taurus with a 3.0 V6. I modded the hell out of the thing. One thing that I did to it was remove the aair intake silencer. I am wondering if my 5.0 has the same thing. When I removed it in my Taurus the engine made a nice loud rumble when I accelerated. It was loud enough that people on the street would look and wonder what was making that sound. I know that if I had the K&N FIPK it will do that but I can't afford it right now. Is there anything I can do to make the engine louder???
I dont know if the trucks have air silencers, but I can tell you that with the K&N FIPK on my 5.0 the sound doesn't really get my blood going...much more to be desired from the beast personally...I can tell you that when I installed the K&N FIPK I found nothing that looked like the "2 soda can sized" air silencer on 5.0 mustangs, sorry
I have an 89 5.0 and got the K&N FIPK. It sounds really cool although i am not sure why. Maybe its because i removed the air silencer but i never saw one when i removed the air box and such. I would suggest getting one. Easy 10 hp on ford light trucks. You can find them on Ebay for $100 or a little more.
i don't think that the trucks came with an air silencer, but i removed the snorkel and it made a little difference. nothing huge. the k&n fipk or something somparable is the only thing i've heard that makes a difference from the intake side of it, but even that only really kicks in from about 3500 up.
LAST EDITED ON 28-Feb-01 AT 03:42 AM (EST)[p]The K&N will make a difference. At any throttle position made to make the truck GO, you can hear it. I recall one instance where I was driving home and there was a jeep full of punks driving "in a spirited manner" decided to show the 4.0 up, so I leaned into it at 2200 in D (AOD). The two in the back (no top on) looked over as i neared their jeep...with a scared, scared look in their eyes...
But, even removing the snorkel will yeild some noise. It should just pop out of the airbox after pushing in one of the "tabs" on the side. Mine had a baffle on the snorkel at the point where the snorkel met the air box (even said on it: Baffle). think that may have been a "silencer" attempt.
