Coilover conversion help

Need some advise from the forum. Just installed the 4.5" Full Traction coilover conversion with King Shocks, but it's way too high. Preload is fully adjusted. First installed 500lb springs which left the front at 30.5" from hub to fender; way too high. Then tried 400lb springs and now at 29.75", still too high (I think this puts me at about a 6-7" lift, nowhere near 4.5"). Next going to try shorter 500lb springs, but afraid it will bottom out and rattle around. The King Shocks that were installed are PR2508OD-COHR and I'm hoping that they were just the wrong ones. Below are some before and after pics. Was hoping it would look like the before but with a better ride. Any help would be appreciated.

Before - 27" hub to fender in front, 28" in rear (this is what I want it to look like)

After - 30.5" front with 500 lb springs

After - 29.75 front with 400 lb springs

Is the kit specifically for excursions? Or a pickup, the trucks sit something like 2” higher than the excursions I thought so if that’s the case you’re where you should be.

Ok. No clue then. I’d imagine the springs will have to settle some but seems way off since you’ll need to go down, about another 2” I think. I looked and didn’t see excursions listed for anything but didn’t look to hard.

The FTS website lists all the Excursion stuff as fitting truck and vice-versa. The leaf sprung super duty is 2" higher than the Ex but the coil sprung super duty is probably another 2" higher. The height you're after is probably stock coil sprung super duty height so I doubt any aftermarket lift stuff is gonna be that low...

i use a 10” shock 300 pound 16”. eibach spring
3/4” of preload 4.5” of uptravel puts my ride height at 27”

edit, mine is a 7.3 and as you can see i have a heavy front bumper and a winch. If i remember correctly my front unsprung weight is 3200 lbs

( after my recent round of shock tuning i am going to switch back to a 350 pound 16” spring “

clears 40s

my 4 link is not a FT kit ( i have used FT link suspensions on other builds ) so it is likely my shock towers are taller and my shock mounts are lower. i built is to accommodate a 10” shock where as your FT is using a 8” shock.

are you using a single or dual rate spring ?
what length spring ?
how much preload ?

post a pic of the upper snd lower shock mount.

i would like to get sn idea of the location of the mount ( the bolt that holds the shock onto the hoop ). in relation to the inner fender well. if you can measure from the bottom of the frame to the center of the upper mounting bolt that will also help

for the lower mount bolt, measure the distance from the bolt to the top of the axle tube.

Sorry, don't have answers to all of your questions, but took some photos. Original springs I had in were 16", tried 500lb and then tried 400lb. I don't know what the preload is, but it's currently maxed out. Going to try 14" 500lb today, which I think should do it, but hopefully I will have enough travel. As a side note, I also put in the Red Head Steering box. The ride is actually great, I just can't have it sitting as high as it is. Pics below.

when you say “ i am going to try “. are you just guessing at spring rates or are you using the unsprung weight and doing math ?

500 lb spring is way to high, 400 is still way to much.

350 or even 300 lb is a much better guesstimate for the 6.0

your answer to my question of how much preload you are using, “i don't know but it is maxed out”. makes no sense considering i can see threads showing. you want 3/4” to 1” preload on the spring but with those 400-500 rates you probably have negative preload

anyhow, if you do not know your unsprung corner weights then 300 lbs 16” spring would be my next “try”

Thanks for your help, but this is over my head. FTS sells their “custom Excursion” King shocks with a 16” spring and 500 lbs for the 6.0. After talking to King directly, they said to go with a 16” 400 lbs or a 14” 500 lbs.

I don’t know my unsprung weight. Right now, they put in the 14” 500 lbs springs. Photo is below.

is this the 14” 500 spring ?

at that 28.5” ride height how much shock shaft is showing ?

Did you install this spring ?

if so, how much preload did you put on it ?

in case you dont know, preload is measured from when the top adjuster collar first contacts the spring and you continue to screw it down compressing the spring.

measure from the top of the collar to the shock end cap. then screw the collar down xx inches. that is your preload.

I did not install anything, that’s outside of my realm, thus why I don’t know this stuff!

There is preload, but not sure how much. I will find out tomorrow as well as how much shock shaft is showing.
