O Ring in Gasket Set?

I'm assembling my first Ford engine. 74 360. In the gasket set there is a thin o ring, about 1 1/2" dia. Can anyone tell me where it goes? The engine was disassembled by some one else so I never got the chance to see it first hand.

Thanks!

Larry

Without a picture I will assume it's the replacement distributor o ring it should actually be a taper cut and not a o ring.

Yeah the distributor is the first think I thought of. This o ring is a common round one and not tapered. Unless, maybe some distributors have different types of grooves?

1 1/2" About 1/8" thick. I also found a 1/8" thick cork gasket in the set. About the same dia as the distributor seal. Not sure of that one either.

Ok who makes the gasket set?
Most sets are for multi year / size engines so it may not be for yours but an extra.
Also it may be listed on the box what the gaskets are and maybe a part number.
If so might be able to cross over the part number for a clue.

That's what I'm thinking too. I'm very familiar with the extra gaskets in Chevy gasket sets but with this engine It's hard for me to know the difference!

I would guess it is the lower o-ring for the distributor. My distributor on my 70 f250 with a 360 has two o-rings on it. A bigger diameter one on the top and one like youre talking about down lower.

Interesting! Mine didn't have the O ring but there is a small groove there. Not as wide as I would expect for the size of this O ring but I can see where it would seal the hole going through the valley floor. Not sure why it would be needed. Regardless, I might just install it there whether it's needed or not.

There's got to be some exploded diagrams somewhere that shows this.

As mentioned these gasket sets usually cover a number of years. The O ring or cork gasket may be for something like a road draft tube or early PVC system on early 60's engines.
