Well, it finally happened. Too many hard shifts, and the stock plastic **** broke off. I've looked for replacements, but they are all for threaded shift rods. The stock ford was a press-on piece of junk. So what am I supposed to use? Dumb ? I know, but its driving me nuts looking for a ****. Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
Buy the correct size die and mill the end of the shifter to make is screw on. Or look for one that accomodates that press on style shifter. They make some the slide on and you have to tighten a set screw.
I'm assuming its a '87-'96 full size Fseries truck.
I bought one from my local chain store on the Motormate/Help rack, it was labeled for Ford products it looked a little smaller than the stock ****, and had no shift pattern on it, but it fit right on real snug, had to force it a little, but its been on for 4 months of shifting and no problems.
Atleast there is a spot to tap it on the shifter. Small hole on my 91. the guy swore to me that there was a set screw. hahaha. i just agreed. took some 2 sided tape and smacked it on there with brute force.
I'll have to give that one a try.
I do like my OEM shifter.
They tried to get it off at the tranny shop. I can see the tape was pealed up a little. haha. I think it will take a die grinder and a chilzzle to get it off now.
Damn they beat your poor shifter **** off to do the trans? What a hack It comes off from under the truck...the shifter stays in place. .... The Mustang shifter looks great though
get a 15-16 mm wrench or whatever size fits with some slack on the shifter and wrap the shifter with a rag and tap up with a hammer, it should pop right off.
My 8 ball shifter had the threaded insert. Me and a friend got it out though. He put on some leather gloves and held the 8 ball. I held a small propane torch to where the threaded insert went in. After a while when it got hot I put some slip joint pliers on the insert and turned it out when the glue weakened. This was on my 8 ball (its real porcelain, not fake plastic), I then was able to put it on my shifter where some epoxy is holding it on.
