Thank you in advance for any advice you offer. First off I know very little about working on vehicles, learning by doing. Now onto the issues, 96 f150 xlt 5.0 automatic ran smoothly till two weeks ago, recently replaced the battery, starter and now the IAC. It has a dual tank switch (front tank was removed before my ownership) the only way it will start now is to have the switch on the front tank and than I have to switch it to the back tank for it to idle. It takes roughly 3-5 seconds to start. Sometimes it will die when switching to the back tank. When it does not die, I am able to rev it up but it hangs for a few seconds before it settles down. Another issue, once started and running the truck will stall when put into R or D.
I've yet to find any vacuum leaks, I will continue to look. I ran codes, none were found. Any other suggestions??
Are you getting black smoke or a lot of gas smell from the exhaust? You might want to pull vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator and make sure it hasn't failed causing gas to go into vacuum side. Had it happen once on an 89 with 5.0. really hard to start, ran horrible, misfired, stalled, etc. Easy fix if that's the problem, and easy to check.
only reason I ask that is because you say you have to switch to the tank that's deleted for it to start, as if it is flooded. Going to the tank that's s gone stops the gas flow, or should. And as previously stated, check fuel pressure to be sure it is in range.
Good luck!
Had black smoke one time after giving it a lot of gas keeping it from stalling. What should the fuel pressure be? Tested at 45....thinking it may be the fuel regulator?
I don't know the exact fuel pressure spec but seems like 45 should be in the ballpark. No gas at FPR vacuum port? If it's leaking it will pump gas right into vac system
did you try getting codes out of it? Air filter clear? MAF clean? Sounds like maybe it's something other than fuel. Maybe even TPI?
Any codes might help in diagnosing? Otherwise it is a lot of trial and error.
Just got back in from cleaning throttle body and checking the fuel regulator, the tip was crooked but didn't have any cracks. I plan on replacing that not too. I put it all back on and was able to get the truck running and in gear with out it stalling to my surprise. So I decided to drive it around the block, that didn't last long because the truck started accelerating on its on, go up to 30 mph before I turned it around and headed back home. The issues are stacking up!
Issue seems to be fixed. Throttle body had a lot of "gunk" built up according to the Mechanic said he cleaned it out and replaced a TP Gasket. Started up and ran smoothly every time. The issue with needing to switch to the non existing front tank at start up hasn't been necessary either. Very strange but I'll take it
