Latest update and questions. I had a hard start issue and decided to replace oil tubes, IPR, glow plugs and relay as well as the high pressure fitting while I was in there. When I put it back together I didn't notice the condition of the IPR connector was toasted. The coating of the wires that go to the IPR (back of turbo) was disintegrated and after installation basically they crossed causing a direct short when energized which caused fuse #22 20 amp Engine Control circuit to blow the fuse. This takes out the PCM, fuel pump and starter not to activate when key is turned. Now that I have figured this out replaced the connector and replaced the fuel injector harness I was able to get it to start up after still having a extended crank time that I initially started with. after running for a short time smoothly after starting it suddenly starts running loud and erratically. I can shut it down and start again and it happens again. My IPR is aftermarket and throws code 2284. What is my next step?
Thanks for any input. Note ran perfectly before just a long crank almost every time to start.
I figured it out without any help from the site. Thanks for nothing
Do some research. If you read just about any other troubleshooting thread you would notice we always ask for readings from some sort of monitoring device so we can pinpoint anything out of the ordinary. Readings, not codes but parameters.
I understand your frustration but there is no need in being rude because you didn’t get a response. Congratulations on figuring it out, what was the solution?
Yes was just frustrated to get it going again. Searched the threads but saw nothing that matched my issues. Basically all came down to harness and connections where coating from wires is completely broken down. Got it patched together just need to replace one remaining harness that lays across the top of the engine to eliminate any other future gremlins that are waiting to surface.
Man if you have issues like that I’d save some money and invest in a new engine and injector harness wrapped with Tesa heat tape and use split loom and zip ties to keep it where it needs to be and protected. There’s nothing worse than electrical gremlins!
Good idea on the heat tape on my new harness! Just make sure the wires at the connection points are not deteriorated. That seems to the the worst on these old trucks.
IPR wires touching caused the PCM / injector fuse to blow and code reader to not recognize vehicle. Wires semi touching ran like the firing order was messed up (loud and erratic)
IPS on valve cover. all wires were semi touching causing a hard start or sputter and no start. Then when I un-plugged after I had a no start then all the wires were touching. At first there were 4 codes FICM, exhaust, fuel... and something else. I after driving. it would almost start but wouldn't continue running. When all three wires touched it ran fine then there was no Acceleration response when pressing pedal.
Now I got all wires not touching runs perfect and no codes besides that damn ABS intermittent light that I haven't got to yet.
After a lot of panic attacks with wires touching and blowing fuses its quite a relief to not blown up any of the high dollar computer parts!!

Your ABS light being intermittent is your alternator... it will die within a few weeks... happened to me 3 days ago after having the same issue with the ABS light. My issue was one of the positive terminals on one of the batteries was jacked up causing my battery not to charge fully, putting extra wear on the alternator leading to the failure. Your recent electrical issues have probably done the same thing.
Once I replaced the alternator and charged my one depleted battery. the ABS light went away. The idiot light for the batteries on these trucks is useless. Don't be like me and wait to replace it until you have 3 kids in the truck and it dies going down the highway at 60mph... I coasted onto my road and barely made it home.
