Hello folks...first time caller, long time wannabe. First diesel. Not a mechanic...can execute and teachable. Not rich, but willing to spend for longevity, durability.
1999 F350 CC, 4x4, 6 sp, LB. Every thing I was looking for. Had searched for well over year, been south several times to look at candidates that did not grow up in my salted back yard. I spent 30 minutes crawling underneath, not really sure what I was looking for but taking it all in and looking for obvious leaks. Vehicle extremely clean , under hood and under carriage. Paid way to much for a 20 yr old vehicle, had it shipped home, first week in the garage was crawling around again and there it was...The Jasper sticker on the engine....I nearly got sick right there. From my title research and speaking with Jasper, all indications are this engine (long block) went in 20k miles ago. It has an Adrenaline HPOP, Banks air, AirDog fuel delivery, and from the sound of it a Wicked Wheel. I have approximately 2000 miles on it to date. I am extremely nervous every time I leave the house. I fully expect the Jasper to---- the bed at any moment . There are no current indications that there is trouble brewing, but I don't even know what I don't know about these things. This AM was the first cold start of my ownership, usually garaged, and she blew slightly blue smoke until it kicked into high idle mode then no smoke at all, and none while driving.
My question is what should I be looking for, monitoring, specifically with a rebuild such as this? Also, I picked up another E350 for cheap, $500, with the intention to rebuild engine and have available...should I hasten that process? Am I wasting emotional energy worrying about any of this? Thanks for any thoughts, guidance!
Pretty hard to screw up the rebuild on a 7.3 if it was done to stock specs. Jasper rebuilds a lot of engines...regardless of reputation...so if your engine is stock on the rebuild, you are fine in my opinion. If it was built to some high horsepower drag truck specs by Jasper, I would be skeptical.
IIRC Jasper has life time waranties on there engines and trans that they rebuild, may want to double check, but honestly its a 7.3 so......meh I would just run with it and maintain it like any other 7.3 and enjoy......
If it’s made it 20000 miles I’d say your fine. I know what your saying about the jasper reputation but just like a lot things you read on line it’s over done in my opinion. Just my 2 cents and you get what you pay for lol.
Enjoy and don't worry about it. Jasper does a crap ton of motors so I'm not surprised you've seen some bad reviews. If they screwed up frequently I doubt they'd still be in business. Seems quite suspicious that the seller didn't mention it, but if it was at a dealer they might not have known.
Thanks fella's for talking me off the edge! It is a stock rebuild to my limited knowledge. No tuner. I immediately changed oil, trans fluid and air filter. Also put on new serp belt. I hand calc a consistent 16.5-17 mpg. I will continue to familiarize myself with Torque Pro and just drive on! There are no plans to abuse or push it. I do need to investigate on FTE the ZF6, it does feel a bit stiff getting into each gear. Thanks again for the input!!
Don’t stress. 2000 miles plus whatever was already on it means nothing is catastrophically wrong. You can get a few used oil analysis reports and increase your confidence.
I would be more concerned about the stuff bolted to the long block. add up all the bits and pieces that get attached to it and I would guess they cost more then a reman long block
I've been to Jaspers 7.3 facility, I wouldn't worry about it. As mentioned, it's got 20k on it, if it was going to be an issue it would have already.
Change fluids and filters, take care of it and you'll be fine.
I have dealt with 2 jasper warranties in my shop, I was not the original installer.
first was a dodge engine, head gasket failure, engine hydro locked after sitting overnight. jasper replaced including all fluids, consumables and labor. no cost to customer.
the other was a dodge cummins transmission, oil cooler failed and put coolant in transmission. Jasper warrantied transmission, but not labor or consumables as it wasn't their product that failed, but they still replaced it for free, including shipping both ways.
