I recently removed the steering box from my "61 Econoline pick up and need help/suggestions on how to adjust the steering. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
what exactly do you need to know? does it have a lot of slack, or does it just roadwalk a little?
if you drained the box, fill it with lubriplate or the equivilent.
if it road walks a little, check the tierods and the steering link. make sure everything is greased properly, kingpins, tierods.
be sure and check the shocks, they will make a huge differance if they are worn out.
if it is slack in the box, there is a screw with a locknut on top of the box. loosen the locknut and tighten the screw, just a little at a time. rock the wheel as you tighten the screw, retighten the locknut and test drive it. if it is better, but not tight enough, repeat the first again. if you get it to tight it will not return like it is susposed to, could be dangerous.
post your location, and a pic of your truck. i would like to see it. i have pics of mine in my gallery.
I'm just a beginner at this, so please try to understand my ignorance. When I installed the steering column and attached the pitman arm, the rotations of the steering wheel didn't seem to match. For instance, 2 1/2 rotations to the left would "lock" it up and yet I could make 3 1/2 rotations to the right before I got the same result. I'm not sure how I match the left/right rotations of the steering wheel with the pitman arm..did any of that make sense?
very good sense.you have the pitman arm about a half round off. pull it back off and turn the wheel about a round, reinstall the pitman arm and you should be in good shape.
by the way, they do turn sharper to the right than the left. right turns are sharper than left turns because of vehicle position on the roadway.
