That's a wooden recirculation block-off valve. They came stock in all '85-87 IDI's with the XLT package.

Just kidding. Your gear-housing cover has the turbo CDR vent tube elbow instead of a typical plate.

There is usually a plate there instead of that breather elbow. Since you don't have a turbo, I'm going to assume someone must have lost the plate, and used a replacement elbow instead, and blocked the elbow with a heater hose and piece of wood. Not entirely spec, but probably fine.

If you want to make it better, just make a block off plate with a piece of 1/16" steel. Or go to a junkyard and buy a plate off any 6.9 or 7.3 IDI.

you already have the original Plate .... the Cast Aluminum adapter is an Add On From Banks .. you just need shorter screws and then you remove the 2 long bolts and use that plate with the shorter screws...

Here is the Banks Kit note the adapter that is in the lower RH corner of this image.

The black hose above the adapter is what used to connect to it.

Hold on a second bud! Youre a little confused... You actuall DO have the plate!

The turbo kit adds on the cast aluminum piece the hose is hooked to, but uses the original plate. The cast piece is open on both ends, so the injection pump gear bolts are still accessible by removing the plate on the end.
Take the two bolts out, then there is a flat metal plate, yours has a sticker on it, cant remember if its a factory sticker. There is likely some sealant, like RTV, between the plate, the adapter, and the gear housing.
Clean it up, find shorter bolts, put a ring of RTV around the plate and bolt it back on without the adapter.

You can also just leave it as it is. If no oil is seeping out, there is nothing wrong with having it blocked off. That adapter is to relocate the CDR to a different spot if a turbo is installed.
If you do decide to remove the adapter, don't toss it. Someone is surely looking for one for their own turbo install.

The part is right there in front of you. Remove the bolts and take the adapter off. The plate on the front of the adapter is the factory part. That gets reinstalled with shorter bolts and rtv. Make certain the CDR is installed on the manifold and not removed or blocked off. You will blow seals almost instantly.

It almost sounds like something Gale Banks would sell tho; military grade, heat resistant wooden blockoff plates. Lighter, faster, and available in two colors to put you in the winner's circle

ill look at this weekend as i work all day. i just replaced the cdr and its in the stock spot. the seal was indeed blown. but it was from the rednecks using ether to start it. blew the cdr and head gasket. why i got to so cheap. the truck now runs oil burning free. i did spot two leaking injectors so ill be redoing all of them soon. also the thing was horrifically over full with some of the worst oil i ever seen. they clearly didn't know how to care for it. thank god i got it before any real damage was done.

The Cast Aluminum part with the hose on it and the wooden plug is not OEM... the steel Plate on the outside of the adapter is OEM the sticker on that Plate is OEM, you can leave it as is or you can remove it and use the OEM steel Plate with shorter bolts.

the CDR being Blown has nothing to do with the Adapter as you no longer have the Banks turbo installed... often one can clean the CDR with Gasoline (not my preferred method) but many on these forums say clean it with Gas.... IF the Diaphragm is ruptured then replacement is obviously in order.

to check Crank Case Blow By you need to install a tube with a 0.406" orifice on the oil filler and use either a Magnahelic or a Manometer Gauge to test the Depression Regulator..

while I guess you can use direct methods to test it on the bench too.
