Hi guys, I put a new clutch kit in my 56 f250, new pressure plate, flywheel has been milled. When I push the clutch in as I get to the end of travel it starts grinding, and sparks come from the bell housing. I just pulled the 4 spd., and the clutch and everything seems fine. The only marks I find is on the sleeve for the throw out bearing, but it was used, could have been that way before. When I push the clutch, I see it slide about an inch on the shaft and the pressure plate fingers move. The sparks seem to be coming from the throw out bearing area. The pedal play seems right, although I didn't measure pedal play with the engine running. Any help would be much appreciated.
Have to ask, but the bearing spins freely? If it does not spin, the pressure plate will make the bearing hub spin, and the fork to bearing hub will be metal on metal spinning...
Also are the 3 pressure plate fingers flat to the bearing surface? the bearing hub could bind on the input shaft, only hitting 2 fingers say, and also cause the fork to spark on the hub?
Open the 2 bolt inspection cover on the top of the bell housing and look in when you do this, you will see right away what the issue is.
I had the top inspection cover open while I depressed the clutch with the engine running, like I said, I see the pressure plate fingers move, the clutch moves about an inch, the sparks and noise seem to be coming from the fingers that push on the throw out bearing. Could the throw out bearing be too stiff?
After I reinstalled the clutch and watched the fork slide the throw out bearing I noticed the three fingers are too close together and hit the sleeve before the throw out bearing! They sent me the wrong pressure plate. I wonder if it is for a half ton? The clutch disk is 11" and is correct.
Can you post a picture of the PP? Do the fingers have adjustment screws on their ends, or are they solid?
An 11" disc won't fit in a 10" (light duty) PP, and the flywheel is drilled differently for 10" vs 11" PP's. I assume you have either the HD 3-sp or a 4-sp?
The fingers are solid, I don't believe there is any adjustment. I plan to pull it out again tomorrow. I will try to post a picture if I can remember how to do it. I have a t98 4speed.
