Frame support under the engine.. removal

I see this crossmember is riveted in place. Can the rivets be cut off and the crossmember removed?

I need to replace the oilpan.

I don’t think you can get it out even with the rivers removed. I have not tried but I looked at mine and I don’t think that idea will fly

Don't do it!! You can jack the engine high enough to get the oil pan out without cutting anything.

Attempting to replace oil pan in the truck is MUCH harder and 10x more likely to LEAK than doing it correctly.

The engine needs to come out and turned upside down if you just want to fix it one time.

I recommend a weld-in dipstick flange and have new oil pan sprayed with a pro bedliner product if the truck is still in the rust belt.

There are a couple of good write-ups here, but the front end does not need to come off and you can leave AC compressor and PS pump and bracket in the truck.

This is far less hassle and I’ve done dozens of them and never had a leak using Motorcraft TA31. No need to spend $80 on a gasket that still requires sealant....

I have thought about that cross member too and I agree that it's probably not a good idea. For starters those rivets were probably smashed into place, with or without heat and will be harder than you would expect to get out.

I'm jealous of truck guys, you guys can still pull the engine without removing the cab. I wished I could do that in a van. Had I known this before, I would have gotten a truck, too late now :/

What makes you think you can't pull the engine out of a van?

Cuz when I look at that short little hood, I see no way it fits through there.

Well...I can't deny that that is an astute observation.

I need to replace the oilpan.

In the factory service manual certain frame rivets are allowed to be removed and replaced with the correct size Grade 8 bolts and nuts and torqued.
I don't know if it is allowed with the cross member.
