Hey guys, Ive got a 87 full size bronco and I just built my 351w up. I presently have cyclone head hugger headers and Im not happy with the sound. It sounds tinty. What I want to know does anyone have a suggestion as to a good header within a reasonable price range. I dont want to run into trouble installing them because I dont have a garage so you know its hard installing headers without a lift. I want to find a good set, easily installed and if I can I would like to put on a full size headers instead of head huggers. Im looking in the summit racing catalog and they have several types of good headers but I dont want to have trouble fitting them around the front rear or driveshaft etc. Any help would be appreciated.
I have always had good luck with flowmaster. Just whatever you get, make sure they have a good thick flange....less chance of of a leak against the heads.
a good header would be JBA,Gibson, Edelbrock, bassani. stay away from the summit specials. now shorties can be installed just fine with out a lift. I have had to install mine twice so far and only took a few hours because of beverage breaks. :-)
I have had good luck with JBAs...just jack of front axle, remove one wheel and the plastic wheel well....and coffe cans or electrical (depending on side)
and go at it from the wheel well....
These bad boys use thicker guage steel tubing and mine are thermal barrier coated....looks and functions well.
havent had an exh leak yet and haven't had to tighten any buts or bolts...
Who makes JBAs, Ive never heard of them? Who carries this brand and how much did they run you ? I looked at a set of hooker headers and can get them for 159.00 through Summit Racing. I take it you didnt have to cut anything to fit them and are they full size headers?
I have shorties on my bronco now and Im not happy with them, thats why Im looking for a set of full size headers. I dont think the shorties give me what Im looking for. My buddy has hedman full size on his 88 Bronco and with a stock motor it has a better sound than mine. Im telling you the short ones have a tinty sound!!! Hooker has a set of full size 18 gauge for 159.00 which I dont think thats a bad price at all.
I don't know if this means much to you but I used to have cyclone full length (on my mustang) and I hated them. I always had to loosen them to change my plugs. (351w) I bought a set of headmans from autozone and I couldn't be happier!!! Great fit..used to have problems with clutch linkage clearance too.. Nice thick flange, can get to my plugs easily now and I haven't had to touch them since I put them on 5 years ago. Also easy to install. Needless to say, I am very impressed with them. From what I hear, Hookers are about the same as cyclones but I never tried them.
Thanks Stepman, Im wondering does your mustang have a nice sound. My cyclones sound very tinty. Every since I built up my 351 the sound changed drastically. Fords have a sound all of there own and certain exhaust compromise it. I found a pair of Heddman fullsize for my Bronco brand new at a very good price but I was skeptical to go through the work and wind up with the same sound
My mustang doesn't have much sound actually, due to the muffles I have on it. I noticed that it changes quite a bit though with diff muffs. One days I'll get around to putting glasspacks back on it ,
The tiny sound is due to the thin primary tube thickness on the cheap headers...along with thin flanges
JBA is made by JBA....with thick laser cut flanges, thicker primariy tubes and a patented firecone collector that improves low end torque....very nice quality headers that won't dissapoint....
Clearance is not really an issue as it never goes off-road. I know, shun the thought. This is my daily driver that tows my boat and tackles the snow. I know it lives a tame life.

Sorry, I like it the way it is and my boat takes up enough of my finances. Plus, I want a motorcycle now too. My truck just barely makes it into the garage as is with the 31s. Maybe I'll build the motor next year.
