Ok i checked my transmission fluid while it was hot and running and it showed nearly 2 inches above the cross check on the dipstick this truck is a 95 4X4 with the e4od tranny 4.9 I6. How posible is it for the wrong dipstick to be in there and if it was would it show up that much off i figured if it was that full that the excess would go out the vent tube. Any help would be appreciated
Called the Dealership and its right dipstick just hope nothing was damaged to bad buy it being over gonna go ahead and change filter and fluid and dump that antifriction stuff in it
It is easy to overfill the tranny since checking the level is a bit tricky. Follow the manufacturers instructions exactly to get the right level.
As far as damage, depends on whether you had a lot of foaming for a prolonged period, especially under heavy or hot load.
As far as antifriction additive, what for? I don't think Ford recommended anything but Mercon in the E4OD. Could be wrong with newer ones but first I have heard of this. If it isn't called for in the manual, you most likely don't need it.
Most additives are snake oils or bandaids. Unless you need to grease your snakes or got an owie, you won't need additives.
Dealer recomended it said that lots of fords have that stutter problem i drained 7 quarts of fluid just by removin the pan. I never knowed tranny fluid tricky to check.
found out that the dealership here puts that antifriction in with the tranny fluid when you have a tranny filter change or flush already mixed in so you dun have a choice unless you buy your own fluid i guess.
Checking tranny fluid is different on many differnt models and brands of trannys. The manual is usually very specific about time, temperature and which gears to go thru and for how long. If you go thru the procedure incorrectly , you can easily get a high or low reading. I have checked trannies for over 30 years of driving and I still get it wrong every once in awhile. So I often check it several times in a few days just to make sure I didn't goof. Like I said can be tricky, at least for me. It's also mentioned as a very common mistake in many automotive magazines etc.
Might explain why some people have nearly 2 inches above the cross check marks, eh?
As far as antifriction, I guess some dealers are using it as a bandaid. The early E4ODs did have problems with torque shudder(the OD clutch slipping) so I guess a bandaid keeps it from being noticed long enough to make some people happy. Sometimes just new fluid will "cure" the problem.
Oh and it is possible to have the wrong dipstick, but unusual.
Good Luck, and reading the manual is usually the best advice.
even though i really dun like reading if i think i don't know how to do something i will usually read up on it and its printed on the dipstick check when hot when idling in park just like all the other vehicles i have owned. when i draned the tranny fluid i got nearly to gallons out of just the pan not counting what dripped off after i had the pan removed
Yup, I think most truck trannies hold between 11 and 15 quarts, thats about 3+gallons, and dropping the pan only gets rid of about half. The rest stays in the TC and cooler, plus a few nooks and crannies.
