I have a 79 with the wide side moulding with the rubber insert. I was wondering if I can switch it over to the plain chrome strip without the rubber?
does it mount in the same location ? i know it would need the smaller clips but do they mount basically like the wide version ?

Pretty much yes but the wide trim has the end piece that goes around the side marker lights. The narrow trim stops at the marker lights. You will have a couple holes to patch if you swap to the narrow trim but otherwise yes just get the smaller clips and it should fit just fine
Yes for the most part it mounts in the same place and uses the same rivet like heads to mount the obviously smaller plastic mount clips. A couple of issues, that thin chrome is HARD to find and the mount clips even harder to locate. If you all ready have a complete set of the trim/clips you are way ahead.
And yes the thin chrome stops at the side marker lights, so you will have a some extra holes in front and all the way to the rear of the marker lights to deal with.
