Took my truck in today for the tailgate recall and they told me they had to test it before ordering parts to do the recall. It has opened 4 times and was wondering how they would test it before repair. Has this happened to anyone else?
Me thinks whomever told you this is full of something. Check the Ford Owner's Site and enter in your VIN to check on the recall, I would bet it is. I just had the recall completed, nothing to test as they basically separate the wiring for the tailgate switch from the wiring for the trailer plugs. A couple wires are cut and made redundant and a new mini-harness wired into this, along with replacing a few other parts. All our trucks were built the same, and thus have the same potential defect.
On the F150 forum the are saying that their tailgate handles are being replaced. I think that is where I saw it. Found it, Canadian F-150's only, water intrusion could cause the tailgate to open inadvertently.
I had the same issue dealing with our Ford dealer with the frozen door latch recall; they wouldn't do anything unless I physically showed up there with a frozen door. On the tailgate issue, I called up the local Lincoln dealer who can do Ford warranty work and they ordered the parts for all of the recalls it needed right then. Goes in tomorrow for the fixes, including the tailgate, and I've never had mine open inadvertently. I think warranty work is heavily dependent on finding the right dealer, and that's coming from a guy who works for a heavy equipment dealership (me).
NTSB recalls are mandatory. There is usually a specific fix for specific Vin. #’s. It’s not like a TSB that is optional and requires additional troubleshooting. The dealer should implement the recall fix...period.
I just took my 2019 in last week for a front end alignment and 3 recalls.
The Dealer told me that Ford is only shipping the part(s) for the warranty work after the customer brings the truck in, VIN is sent to Ford and Ford then sends the part to the dealer for repair.
He told me they are not allowed to keep the inventory for the warranty work - like they did last fall.
That was 2 weeks ago. I'm still waiting to hear from the dealer to see if the part has arrived.
My tailgate hasn't demonstrated the problem, yet; However, with the minimal clearance of my 5th Wheel trailer - if it opened it wouldn't be pretty.

Because the frozen door latches wasnt a recall. It was just a TSB. So they have to see it happen.
You guys need different dealers! I originally called my dealer to use my fordpass points, which they ordered the part I wanted over the phone. So I asked about the recalls, they showed the carpet & tailgate recall so she took my VIN over the phone & ordered the parts. Also ASKED me if I wanted to do the door latch TSB. I declined the door latches since my truck stays in garage.
I got a call a week later saying parts were in. Took it in & waited on it. Total 2 hours. In & out, recalls done. Easy dealer to work with.

I totally agree! Find new dealers! I called in and had my local dealer order the parts before I scheduled the repairs. I had the tailgate, carpet and frozen door locks done on the same day. no hassle whatsoever.
If you have the tailgate recall done, check your spare tire. For some reason they have to pull it down, the day I brought it home I found the lock cover was flipped down. Today I was putting grease in the two empty connectors in the spare tire region and found the spare tire was loose. Took almost two full turns to get it tight.
^^^^^Yes, I read they did this and removed my spare before I took it in. Needed to check air in it anyway.
they do this to access wires on the drivers side to splice the new harness into. My guy did a crappy job of retaping the wires, so I retaped the wires again and tucked them all up out of the way before putting spare back up.

Great... I wonder how much time Ford allows ‘em to do the job?
My plan is to (try to) schedule the work for the two recalls for the same time as my 20K service.
If I remember correctly, Ford allows them about an hour and a half for tailgate. I recommend dropping tire ahead of time to save time and hassle of rechecking it. Also make sure you check the wires afterward and apply dielectric grease to any plugs down there before you put tire back up.
I had them do the carpet recall at the same time. I watched him do that & it only took about 20 min. Total on that one.
The recall I got in the mail said that the dealer only required the tailgate and did not require the truck to do the recall. Also had a warning about securing loads before driving the vehicle without a tailgate. Lol.
Never heard of such a thing! How can they say Ford wont allow them to order parts for a recall until the customer brings the truck in? Any recall Ive ever had the manufacturer sent out notifications and if you didnt bring the vehicle in they kept reminding you until you had it repaired.
Again... find new dealers... Even if that was Fords policy. I cant imagine a dealership intentionally inconveniencing their customers over a recall.
Then they cant understand why so many people will never bring a vehicle to a dealer for anything other than warranty work... if they have no choice.
My 2019 Superduty is the first Ford I owned since 1995 due to how they handled warranty issues I had... Or I should say didnt handle. So far my dealer has been great but that 1995 F-150 was purchased at this same dealership. Thats almost 25 years they lost me as a customer.
I owned a Searay which was totaled by hurricane Sandy. It was a 26 foot Sundancer. A very nice boat but kind of a minivan on the water. I replaced it with a Sailfish 29 center console. Way more seaworthy. Kind of an F-250 4x4 on the water compared to the minivan... Searay was the best when it came to warranty... Sailfish...... not so much. I love the Sailfish. Its a far better boat on the water. And really the warranty issues were minor cosmetic type problems. But they just ignored me. So I can only imagine what they would do if I had a costly issue. Same dealership for both boats.
I would consider another Searay if they had a boat of the type I was shopping...
I doubt theres any chance I would consider another Sailfish.. And I like the boat more.
Its 100% over the warranty response.
Im loving my Lariat. Not having any problems. A little bump steer. Its everything I expected I was buying in a 3/4 ton solid axle 4X4.
But if I get screwed around over warranty issues Ford will lose me forever.
My wife has been an Infinity driver..( we lease her cars) for 4 vehicles in a row. They have been great with service, warranty, or any issue imaginable. Of which there have been very few. But its starting to look like they arent really going to have anything we want to spend our money on this next lease. Lots of 4 cylinder engines. or higher cost for what we are interested in than we are willing to pay. And Im hoping something changes before we end up going to a different dealership because I feel a sense of loyalty to them based on how we have been treated by them.
All little things Im definitely making a big deal out of. And the more car prices climb the harder I will be to please.
I really hate the entire dealership experience. Thats why I end up keeping things until I either hate them or they are going to pieces.
