Hi All ,

I recently picked up my first pickup with a 6.9 IDI. I absolutely love this machine and want to learn everything I can about it . I figure that my fist step is to be able to identify every component and wire in the engine compartment . I don’t have a mechanical background so this is all new . I bought the Haynes manual but it honestly hasn’t been all that helpful in identifying the hat everything is and what it does . Can you recommend other sources to figure out what each part and wire is and does?

Buy the 1980's Ford Service Manual on ebay. It's got everything:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-Ford-T...YAAOSwNZtZwsep

Also, make sure it has the 6.9 Diesel supplement. If it doesn't, then you can buy that as well.

glad to have you on board,

With no mechanical background you need to tread lightly as you can easily cause yourself thousands of dollars in damage,

I can't answer your question as to a source to provide you with what each part is and what it does,

lets start with some basics from you so we can help you better (since you have no mechanical background)
how old are you?
what state are you in?
have you owned a vehicle before?
what year is your truck?
what model is it?
how many miles are on it?
what transmission?
do you know the person your bought it from?
did the previous owner give you any maintenance history of the truck?
Do you know how the truck was used? daily driver, farm truck, equipment hauler, plow truck ?
Does it run right now?
does it start within 5 seconds of cranking
does it smoke?

lot's to learn but these are definitely members that can help solve problems if you identify them correctly,

we like pictures also, even video,

.

I have an 83 with manual transmission and 60k miles. It's spent its life as a farm truck in upstate NY and i'm the third owner. The second owner only had it for about a year. It smokes a lot on startup and can take a little cranking when its cold. It doesn't have any major issues that I know of, except the injectors leak diesel on top of the engine. I went ahead and order a new seal kit for them.

OHHH YEAHHH!

Installing a return line kit should fix the fuel leak on top of the engine. Make sure you use bearing grease to lubricate the return line cap when they're installed. You should feel a positive "click" when they seat on top of the injectors.

OEM Ford workshop manuals are the best, Mitchell On Demand is good IF you already have a Technical Background.

Never looked at one but guys have said through the years the Haynes manual is not that great. Helm Inc. published all the genuine factory manuals that IH and Ford dealerships used. Don't know about all the IDI years, but some required 3 manuals that cover everything, first is Body, Chassis,& Electrical, second is Electrical & Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual, and third is Engine. Electrical & Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual illustrates ALL wiring, all switches, relays, and terminals and locations where all electrical components are from bumper to bumper plus of course color codes. It's a "must have" for any wiring work. You get your money's worth, the Body, Chassis, & Electrical alone is almost 3" thick.
