I would try the starter wire to passenger battery test. Do not have your key in the run position. Listen to the engine for even cranking. Maybe video that too.
So This only happens when the truck is dead cold. I did that very thing yesterday. Truck has an even crank across the board after started up I’ll film it again to verify. I get white smoke after I start the truck but it goes away on warm up. Related issue?
Ima go with leaking injector -- I hear the slight hydro lock in the vid
if you really want to know -- pull the glow plugs and crank over - which cylinder blows fuel?
run contribution test may show one injector dumping fuel
could pressurize the fuel rails(with air) individually to see which bank was leaking
Normally stiction refers to the oil side spool valve, that would not be the case. Fuel through the injector while sitting is related to damage on the fuel injection side.
Fuel would leak into a cylinder, filling up the piston recess and possibly above the top of the piston. In this case, you've probably had some of the recess filled up. When you start to rotate the crank and that cylinder is compressing the trapped air, it's compression is way higher due to the fuel taking up space. The starter has a very difficult time compressing air to that high of a pressure. If you have more fuel in the cylinder, you can get to the point of a full hydrolock, there is so much fuel in the cylinder it just jams the piston and the fuel has nowhere to go.
With some fuel in the cylinder, the pressure is high, the starter struggles, but with each revolution, some fuel gets ejected out of the exhaust valves and with each revolution the starter has an easier time. Eventually, it clears and the engine runs normally. But with the over fuelling, you get the white smoke.
