I am the original owner of my 2005 F350 6.0. It is mostly stock with 171,000 miles. I have a small coolant leak and think my water pump is going bad (slight squealing when at idle). Would an OEM replacement be the best option or does anyone recommend a different one? How long does the stock water pump last? Also, how hard is it to replace a water pump on the 6.0?

A billet aluminum housing isn’t really necessary but sure is nice looking. I couldn’t choke down $350 for a water pump so I went with a Dieselsite pump. $115 and lifetime warranty. I’ve never had any issues with any product they sold me. https://www.dieselsite.com/20045july...waterpump.aspx
if you do a pump change, it would be a good time to change the tensioner and all the idler pulleys. also some of the early pump, like my 03, came with a water pump pulley that proved to have too thin material.. might want to look into that too.
The ford tsb 05-13-16 says that "some" 03-05 engines have a too thin water pump pulley. engine before a build date of 1/1/2005 may be effected. A new pulley is around $50.

Did you have any issues replacing your water pump? It looks kinda tight for space down there.

Not really, I have plenty of room! Haha! Last time I replaced it was about 30k ago and it was a Mororcraft water pump that started weeping from the freeze plug. I just got my Dieselsite pump in today and will install it once I get the engine back together.
You can easily get to the water pump from the top. Drain the coolant from the radiator, remove the radiator, belt, fan and stator then you can swap the water pump.
I used the dieselsite pump with the billet impeller. They said they use the same housing as ford but their impeller. Install wasnt bad but i did it at the same time i did my ac compressor so i got into way more, plus my tensioner was froze up (figured that out trying to take the belt off). The pump and tensioner werent a bad job, but that compressor was a nightmare. I would definately look into the new idler since its not expensive or difficult and you wont have to go back in for that. Id do a new belt while its all apart too.

They give you a lot of room to get those compressor bolts out right? It’s even a PITA with the whole front off.
Only the 90mm 2003 pump has the billet impeller, the 100mm is steel.

I might have been willing to plunk down $229 for their 03 pump with billet impeller when I was in the market. I went with a new napa gold pump with plastic impeller and lifetime warranty for $140 IIRC. Already had to replace it after 2.5 years due to leaking. Perhaps my head gasket leak had something to do with that. There's a lot to be said about being able to pick up a new pump next day at a local store instead of having to have it shipped, especially if you need your truck for work. That said, I wouldn't just buy any old pump from a local store AND that billet impeller gives me a woody. So there's that.

My pulley was one of those. POS sheared right off one day right after I left for work. Doorman replacement was $90 at O'Reilley. It is very stout and has a lifetime warranty.

No need to pull the radiator but you will need to drain a couple gallons of coolant. The hardest part is managing the fan and stator once the fan comes completely unscrewed from the water pump. Do yourself a favor and leave the stator off when putting it back together. Talk about easy belt, pulley, AND water pump replacements.
