Hood Latch Trouble

Hey Folks!

Got myself in a little bit of a pickle.... I have been working on a leaky timing cover and it is turning into a trip to the machine shop... But the trouble is I closed down for the day and shut the hood, and instead of shutting it is locked in an almost shut position. I am guessing that I moved the latch into the closed position while working and then pushed the hood down on the latch. So it is hooked, but pushed against the latch. I know about the manual release you pull to the right with a hook, but the catch is too far to the left and I can't hook it. I can't push down or pull up on the hood and pulling the cab release does jack. I think I could get a long wrench on spring retainer, but I don't know if that will get me anything toward improving the situation.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try pushing down hard on the hood to get the latch to close completely. Then pull the hood cable release and open the hood as per normal. If that works proceed to lube up the entire works, including the springs.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it won't work... the latch was already in the closed position, so the hood is literally pushing against the latch, and it is being held down by the secondary catch (the part you have push to the side to fully release the hood after you pop the latch from inside the cab. I think I am going to have to push up and try to move the release lever to release the secondary catch and let the hood go back up.

Edit - Upon a moments more thought, pushing up won't help, so as you suggested down is the way to go, but the already closed latch is in the way... so I will see what I can tomorrow.

Can you remove the grill? If not, what about accessing the mount bolts for the hood latch thru the grill?

That’s usually how I’ve opened hoods that are stuck shut. Sometimes you can reach up from underneath the bumper to get at them too - it all depends on how much room there is and the location of the bolts.

If you can at least loosen them, maybe the latch will slide enough to relieve the tension and then you can get it open.

Got it! I levered the release lever with a long socket extension and it let go of the hood, so forward with the tear down!

Thanks for the suggestions folks!
