Hey everyone. I have a 2003 F250 7.3 with about 211k miles on it. I have developed an oil leak somewhere on the front of the engine but am having trouble tracking it down. I currently have it at the shop after my failure to find it, and they are still looking into it but figured I would post here to see if I could get some more help. I had first thought it was the HPOP reservoir or the oil cooler gasket at the front. After cleaning that up some, it appears to be coming from higher up. No oil in the valley. Shop feels it is looking like it could be the front cover, but after cleaning it up yesterday and running it all day they couldn't find a leak. I have attached a few pictures for what its worth though they aren't very good.
I see a pretty significant crack in the aluminum casting.
Simple green and elbow grease. Get it surgically clean. Start it and get it up to temp. Follow that lead.

The thought of a crack scares me in a 7.3, I hope its just his oil cooler gaskets/orings. I was scared *****less when I replaced my reservoir gasket, from reading the 2 different gaskets and front covers.

Denny,
Where are you seeing a crack? The bottom of the front cover leading to the oil cooler? Hopefully that is just a casting line covered in oil. Looks pretty straight and protruding not open. HOPEFULLY
I apologize for not being clear. Does not appear to come from cooler flange gaskets or cooler o rings after cleaning it up. Also doesn't appear to come from the reservoir gaskets either. Shop cleaned it more and after driving it around yesterday are still unable to locate it. Said it is definitely not the front plug on the oil rail. We discussed using dye to try to find it.
After further review, I must ask, was this rig ever "Frozen" ?
Denny
I'm sorry, I don't know what you mean by "frozen". I am the second owner and have had it since 2006 and it has spent its years since then in central Texas if that helps.
The crack looks like it's coming from the front cover. Just look above the oil leak and you will see the crack clearly about half inch to 3/4 inch long vertically.

Is this what you're referring to? I believe that may just be
shadow from the flash at the edge of the front cover.
Its your power steering pump. Its leaking transmission fluid which acts as a degreaser and catches dirt and dust too. I too pulled my hair last summer trying to find this leak. Leaks drive me insane and must be fixed immediately. I could never be a plumber. I rebuilt my PS Pump last summer too. Think its listed as Purple Power. C if I can find it.
Search "Purple Power Pump" in Search Forum. IDK how to post a reference other than this. But Yeah. That is exactly what my leak looked like. I thought fuel lines, oil cooler, oil pan,..... It was all lies and deceit from ATF.

Just to follow up on this one. Checked the power steering reservoir and it is at its proper level. Definitely need to do a power steering flush though. If things dry up here over the weekend I will do a little more cleaning and checking but so far still no visible leak.
