Small Terriers are better. They are bred to seek out and destroy vermin. My 2 Yorkies have killed mice, snakes, chipmunks, squirrels and vole. Cats play with their prey. Terriers kill their prey.
There should be a low voltage electrified mat you could park on. It doesn't take much electricity to kill them, and that would be ideal. But it wouldn't even need to be fatal, just a nice zap would send them the other way.
They do eat Irish Spring. I have first hand experience with this.

Rats live in the sewer. They encounter and eat things that you and I wouldn't eat even if there were guns to the head. I don't think Irish Spring is going to do more than make them cautious for a bit. After they get used to it, I suspect, businesses as usual.
Never found anything that really worked in the last 20 years for my RV. Sometimes nothing works and sometimes something works. My thought is that nothing works for rodents but it looks like it works when you put it there and they don't happen to visit your RV.
I am like you I have about tried it all. What works the best for me it to just shine a bright LED under the hood. In the RV I just leave the lights on inside and in the basement.
