There are a couple of BLM places around Billings that have been closed due to the overadundance of appliances and such that people have shot and refused to clean up.
I went to one and spent most of the afternoon cleaning up shotgun hulls, and spent wads. I was thoroughly disappointed.
Yes it is bad now-a-day people throwing cans and bags everywhere....
But some of these people have been getting mad at bags and stuff flying out the back of pick-ups...I have had that happen to me at time, I have so much stuff back there and sometimes a bag might fly out..So I been making sure anything light weight is tied down or is thrown away.
Hey, cigarettes are bio-degradable! once they get damp, they are soon gone. It's just made out of leaves and wood pulp, like a wasp nest. I just hate to see 'em tossed in DRY country where they last a much longer time. But somewhere it rains? Soon gone...
You are correct in that they bio-degrade over time, but there are always newly discarded cigarette butts to take their place... hence they are still littered all over the place!
Not really, unless you are in a high useage are like a bus stop. Most smokers I know are pretty neat. IF there is an ashtray there, like at a bus stop, they will usually use it. But it always amazes me at how people will gripe about the butts, but not put an ashtry there for people to use. Back when I used to smoke, I would often be griped about fiinding trashscans by the score, but no ashtrays. Smokers know better than to toss a recently smoked butt into a trashcan which may contain paper, solvents or other highly flammable items. I once emptied my car ashtray into a gas staion trash can. I hadn't smoked for a while, but one was still smoldering in there and I didnt realize it. the whole can started to burst into flame. I had to dump in the widnshwield washer water to put it out. The whole station may have gone up!
During the Firestorm that was happening in BC during September (Over 700 fires burning),a woman pulled up beside us at a red light and the took drag & flicked the lit butt onto the fresh asphalt.
I mentioned to her that this is the kind of thing that starts forect & Grass fires.
Her reply: "There ain't no fire going to start from my butt"
From: I'm lost somewhere in NJ -- can someone please find me?!?!?!?
I smoke, but refuse to use the ashtray in my truck. Using it is akin to flushing your toilet after you take several dumps. The smelly stinky stuff just sits there and spreads. Cigarettes are biodegradable, so out they go. Granted I won't litter them in high foot-traffic areas (I put them out and then throw then in the closest trash receptacle). But when I'm driving, the window works for me. I'm careful not to have them land on the windshield of the guy behind me, or near anything that can burn though.
Ever seen a cig after a couple rainstorms? Not much left of it. That, however, is were I draw my line. I don't throw other garbage out the window... I have a friend who would toss anything.. candy wrappers, empty snapple bottles, you name it. One day, when he was riding shotgun and tossed something out my window, I stopped the truck, returned to the scene, and made him retreive it. He never littered in front of me after that day.
I still don't think that makes it right to throw them out the window. It's still littering and we still have to look at it. Yes, the rain does degrade them quickly, but there are always more that come back.

What about the filter element? That stuff seems to be non-biodegradable. It's not paper and it's not leaves. It's almost like fiberglass (???) That seems to stay around for awhile. I like the idea of deposit cans and bottles. It would eliminate a lot of big trash and help with recycling.
Ciggie filters take forever to go away. If I am in public and there is no butt can, I stomp out the butt and stick it in my pocket. I have found filters that have gone through 2 or 3 washings stuck inside the washer because I forgot to empty my pockets.
On another note: I read in the paper a few years ago that the squirrels in NYC were getting aggressive toward humans because they were eating discarded cigarette butts. The squirrels were essentially having nic fits. Guess they can't biodegrade fast enough...
ever since i been in the military, people always throw their butts where ever they so desire, and when we do a police call(litter pick up) i always end up picking up a fair amount of butts. seeing as how i am a non smoker this pisses me off. i will probably go high and to the right when i get out and i see a civilian do it.
