Was the clutch linkage on the 4 spd overdrive trans (looks like a toploader) mechanical or cable operated? I have the chance to replace my 3spd on the tree behind the 240 sixwith one of these.
Sounds like a cool swap. What's the first gear ratio on those? Just curious.
Don't know the answer, but back when these trucks were built most, if not all of the clutch linkages were mechanical and whether or not to go hydraulic usually depends on the bell housing.
This is the trans that uses the same bell housing as stock, correct? Not one with an integrated bell like the ZF's and such?
It is the Ford RUG SR-OD Single Rail 4 Speed Overdrive (Tremec T-170). They were used 78-84 in F-100/150's fuel saver editions with 300/302/351W. They had separate bell housings with the SBF pattern, and used mechanical, and later external hydraulic clutch mechanisms. They are very weak and parts are hard to find. You will probably have to cut your driveshaft as I believe they are longer than your 3 speed. Tremec T170 SMOD, SROD, TOD Transmission Specs & Ratios
Does anyone know if I would need a tunnel cover interior panel for conversion to the T-170 TOD when converting from a three on the tree set up in a 69 F100?

Don't know if this is the transmission you are talking of? It is a SROD out of a 81 with 300 six, best picture I have of it at this time.
It is a 3sp with 4th being OD. The bell housing does bolt on like the T18 & T19 transmissions.
On the 80 to think 83 clutch used linkage after they went juice.
The 80-86 trucks if auto and maybe a 3 on the tree did not have a removable pan above the transmission where the SROD, T18 & T19 did have removable pans to access the top of the trany.
I can also tell you the SROD & T18 use 2 different pans as the shifters come out in different places.
I know this is for 80's trucks but it may help you on your swap.
