When I change ATF fluid, I measure fluid level on dipstick beforehand as specified and record that level (full, halfway, etc.). When I drop the trans pan I collect all the fluid in the drain pan. I pour the drain pan in a one gallon container that is marked with divisions of quarts and ounces. The amount that comes out is the new amount that goes in, this provides a pretty good base starting point.
My 2017 F350 6.7 4x4 DRW gets a pan drop and filter every 60-65k miles. I use a valveoline ATF that meets MERCON LV spec, truck has around 225k miles and has spent most of its life with around 20k trailer hooked to it. Still shifts and drives great. It typically takes around 10qts just draining the pan and changing filter. I pour into a three gallon paint mixing bucket with level marks, then refill with what came out
Just did a drain and fill w/filter change at 60k.
This is the reading on my dipstick after adding 8.5 quarts and reaching operating temp 196* and cycle through gears. Just want a 2nd+ opinion on the measurement.

That's pretty much what I had. I added 9 quarts. I drove the truck to a more level spot, cycled the trans through the gears slowly, then checked again and it was at the top of the hatched zone so I left mine alone.
Interestingly, when I pulled the drain plug and drained the pan, then reinsert plug and refill it only took 6 quarts. So the filter and the shape of the pan hold 3 quarts? Wow.
