2012 Steering Box

Hi all. My trucks a 2012 F-350. Always want to be one step ahead of possible issues. Anyone replace 2011-2015 maybe even to present steering box? Just curious of time required and difficulties. Thanks for any input!

You could call West Texas Off road, they rebuild them and can port it for hydro assist. The hydro can be done right away or down the road...

Yeah I hear you Jim. I sent mine off, it was a turn around of about 9 days, this of course depends on how busy they’re. There’s videos on rebuilding them but I opted to let the professionals do it. Good luck!

While I don’t have any experience with WTO and my F-250, I can confirm that these guys great at what they do! I drove my Wrangler over to San Angelo where they are based about a year and a half ago for a hydro assist setup. I had my Jeep there when they opened at 8:00am for a full Remove and Replace with their ported box, along with the hydro assist ram mounting and hydraulic lines. Even after them shutting down for an hour and taking me to lunch...I was still headed home around 3:00pm. That was one of the best mods I’ve done to my ‘07 Wrangler. I’m locked on both ends with 37’s. If it’s locked up and in low, and you find yourself in a predicament...turning while maneuvering was pretty much out of the question. Now it steers effortlessly!

It sounds like you're asking about basic R&R, not a rebuild. I haven't done it on an '11-16 but I don't see how it looks much different from the other trucks I've done like OBS Fords and '94-01 Rams

A couple lines, a steering shaft, a drag link, a few bolts thru the frame.

The biggest gotcha would be having a pitman arm puller large enough. The biggest physical challenge is holding the box in place while starting a bolt (they're not exactly light when you're out-of-position)

That said, I don't consider this a PM item - if it ain't broke don't fix it. I'm not aware of these boxes being problematic and the parts store remans are crap, thus a proper replacement ain't cheap

You got it WWR. I've been running 40's since day one, about 125,000 miles ago. I don't want to wait till that box implodes on me. Just weighing my options for now. Preventative maintenance. That's probably why my trucks been good to me, no surprises yet lol.

Then go hydro assist. Take the load off the box and move it to a ram

Jim, most people don’t know what preventative maintenance is, hell most don’t even check their oil. If you could find a box from a part out truck, you could send it in have it rebuilt and ported then leave it on the shelf till you need it. Since you’re running 40’s, I would seriously consider hydro assist, it’ll take a lot of strain off the box.

Not to mention the relief you’re going to get in your arms if you do!

You know the stock box actually turns the 40's quite well. When I picked up my new, at the time 2005, I complained about the steering being 'to difficult' lol. After I installed my lift with 38's it definitely didn't get better, I just got used to it. When I ordered my 2012 the stock steering was much better. I really liked it. After I installed my lift with 40's there was no difference. It was a fantastic feeling. I could actually steer those puppies with one finger, something I couldn't think of with my '05. My concern is not that the pump has difficulty turning the wheels, I just feel, or think, that the 'box' is possibly wearing with strain of turning 40's. In the beginning when I got it lifted I could drive down the street with one finger on the wheel, really a sweet set up! Now, although it's still pretty good, I'm just noticing some slight sloppiness and I mean slight. Just thinking (preventative maintenance) that maybe I should consider replacing the box some day. This is how I think...if the pump breaks it just won't turn those 40's anymore. If that box breaks...need I say more? Maybe I'm over thinking this. Lot of guys have told me the Ford boxes are really unbreakable.
