Idle Issue

2017 6.7L

I used the auto start to start the truck about 3 minutes before I came out to it. I noticed it was idling a lot higher than normal. When I hit the start button I noticed it was idling right at 1000rpm. I tapped the gas pedal and it dropped to the normal 5-600rpm. So I waited to see if it would climb back to 1000rpm and sure enough about 20 seconds later it slowly climbed at about 100rpm increments back to 1000rpm and stayed there until I hit the gas pedal. As far as warming up the truck it hadn’t been sitting for more than an hour and the outside air temp was about 58 degrees.

Fast forward to this morning I wanted to see if it would do it. And in fact it did. Same story however the truck had been sitting overnight. Air temp this morning was 57 degrees.

I will start the truck normally later this afternoon and see if it does it again.

Any ideas? After it’s been driven or at least is in Drive it idles normally.

NVM, did more research and it seems normal. I don’t understand why all of a sudden it’s doing it but it doesn’t appear anyone has a clear answer other than the dealer says it’s normal and if there aren’t any codes it’s normal.

I have a 2019 F-350 with a 6.7 and notice that in colder weather, the truck will idle around 1,000 rpm until it reaches a certain temperature, at which point it will idle at a lower rpm when I just remote start it to warm up. When the temps are warmer outside, the truck will just idle at the normal rpm when remote started. Not sure what temps exactly are the deciding factor for this. I have never tapped the accelerator pedal though to see if it drops in rpm and then returns to the high idle rpm when cold.

Sounds like the normal high idle function. As was said, when the engine is cold, the computer will do its thing to help warm it up a bit quicker.

Also, please, use the term 'throttle pedal', or 'accelerator'. Your truck does not have a 'gas pedal' (and if it ever does you are in for a big repair bill)

I drove the truck this afternoon and it’s doing the same thing. The truck was warm and it was 70 degrees outside. Dropped the ol lady off at the door at Kroger and waited out in the truck. Same high idle, I don’t believe it is normal to have a warm truck and 70 degrees outside idling high. Maybe it’s a regen thing, I’m going to put quite a few miles on it tomorrow but if that doesn’t clear it up, I’ll call the dealership. It has never done it until the other day and it’s been a hell of a lot colder and a hell of a lot hotter.

"Air temp this morning was 57 degrees."

Wow! I would love it if that was the low morning temp!! Think it was around 32 when I got up this morning. I hate the cold! But it sounds like your truck is doing what it's supposed to do.

I’m thinking that’s what it had to have been. I put about 100 miles on it the other day and it has not idled high again. Same cool morning temps and warm afternoons, as well.
