Hello all. I inherited my father's 1978 F100 custom, 300 inline six, three speed on the column, step side about. 5 years ago. He bought it new in '78 and took very good care of it. It's probably pushing 300,000+ miles, but I honestly don't know if you can tell once it rolls over. No major work has ever been done, and she's needing alot of attention. What I would like is to keep her somewhat stock, but add HP. Any suggestions? I know a new intake, exhaust, and probably head work are for sure coming. It has a horrible noise when operating around 40-60 mph. Sounds like spark knock to me. And a ticking when idle. I am sure i will end up tearing her all the way down, and I'm not opposed to that. I appreciate all the advice.

Catching up on the maintenance and repairing any known problems will probably give it back a few HP. The folks in the "1973 - 1979 F-100 & Larger F-Series Trucks" and "Ford Inline Six, 200, 250, 4.9L / 300" forums can help you with more.

Welcome aboard!
