Just bagged a NOS wheel from EBAY. However, the part number traces to an 84-86. Can I still install this on my 77 or are the splines different? Any other problems I can encounter?
The splines should work, the only problem you might run into is hooking the horn back up. The location of the ground pin is different on some wheels. A jumper can take care of this.
You might not be able to put the same type of turn signal clip on it too. I changed mine with a 87 model and the splines worked but I couldn't transfer the turn signal clip that flips your turn signals off after completing your turn. Now I just have to do it manually. (sounds better than saying to do it by hand!!)
I talked to the seller and they agreed since they described it wrong to go to the next bidder. Too bad I doubt that I will find another NOS wheel for that cheap. But I want the signals and horn to work so no big deal. I did grab a horn pad and TS switch for $22 today so its not a total bust on Ebay today.
Check E-bay again, I saw a nice sterring wheel, hard grip black, with good contact pins for horn from a 1979 pickup with no center peice, no cracks and very little wear for a starting bid of $15.00 And a seperate item, horn center, woodgrain, no cruise with wires for horn hook up that fits a 78-86. Sarting bid $15.00 get the two peices and you have a great steering wheel. I saw them this last weekend and don't know when auction closes.
I missed the bid on one wheel but no one bid on it so I contacted the seller and am buying out of auction. I did get the horn pad with the contacts for $22.00 so for less than $50 I will have a better than what I got wheel. Now I just have to get a good steering column!
At projectbronco.com there is a technical article about installing a '86 cusioned grip steering wheel into a '73-'79. It would appear stock but feel comfy like an aftermarket wheel - best of both worlds...
