Hi. I have a 1965 F100 with a 352. It died on me the other day and now won't start at all. So I tested for a spark and there was none. I started looking at the wiring and found at the back of the alternator a wire that had corroded and broken off. It runs from a little cylinder attached to the back of the alternator. What is this thing and is it causing my problem? The part number on it is C5TA-18827-A2 and I can't find a mention of this anywhere on the net. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.
Is this a silver cylinder that looks like a condenser in the dist.? If so it is a noise filter for the radio to cut out alternator noise. It won't affect the ignition. Try checking for power at the coil, there should be ~9-10 volts at the + terminal with the key on.
Check to see if you burned out the fuseable link coming off the starter solonoid. if it's bad, you'll get nothing at the ign. switch. it's one of those eyelets bolted on with the positive battery cable. You can usually tell by looking at the wire and see that it's slightly melted or some have a square block by the eyelet marked with a "14" or a "16" on it. Take a test light and poke it and see if you get any power. Sometimes the alt would overcharge and pop them.
Thanks for the replies all. I'll check for a bad fuseable link tomorrow. I replaced the coil (didn't have a way to test the old one) and the truck fired up right away. Then the next day it would only turn over but wouldn't fire up. Day after that it fires up no problem. I don't really trust it yet to drive it very far.
I think there is still some drag on the system since the alternator light comes on (faintly) with the key in the on position before I start the truck. What could this mean? Also I think the starter drive is toast since I can hear a whirring sound once in a while when I try to start it. Could this drag the system at all? Thanks again!
If it's firing up at times, the fuseable link is ok. If they go bad you get nothing to the coil and no start, period. If you get the whirring sound, the bendix on the starter is weak. Replace it before you get stranded somewhere. As for the alt. light, it should come on as you turn the key to start. As long as it doesn't stay on while it's running, you're ok. I'd take a good look at the ign switch, they have a bad habit of self-destructing on themselves. The next time it doesn't fire up, test the switch to see if you're getting power thru the switch. It may be losing contact every now and then. A sure sign of old age.
