The trick is to do your homework. Never deal with someone who you can't call on the phone, and check everything out about them. Satellite photos of their house/business, you name it... (mapquest).
Look around for other people who have dealt with them. Check their feedback rating on Ebay.
I've bought and sold on Ebay and never had a problem.
I think i got a good deal, stainless steel shortys for 308.00 delivered to my door.I ordered some gaskets for 39.00 from SCE.
I was worried because i never dealt w/ebay before.
krewat The FBI is looking into a deal involving a friend right now. Someone stole his E-bay identity and reposted his motorcycle. They are able to some how take over your name keeping the Great E-bay seller thing with all the good ratings.
I have no idea how it is done but it is done a lot. Just be very carefull and watch yourself. Even a seller with all you listed can be a bogous seller. I am looking for a link that he gave me on on guy that made millions doing it.

Cute... some of the Ebay announcements I receive are outright bogus. I could imagine a hacker would be able to craft a SPAM and trick enough people into going to their site and giving their Ebay password. That's been a documented method of Ebay identity theft. I can also think of a few ways of tricking people with some crafty HTML/Javascript inside of an auction...
But you are right. Even with dilligence, it's possible, but you just accept the risk. You run a risk of getting robbed or conned on your way to the store to buy milk. Dangerous to buy milk? Nope ...
Didn't read the article before I replied before... notice that it was the bogus email that he sent first that got him the userid's that lets him get his dirty work done.
Plain and simple "trojan-horse" situation where someone steals your password because they made you enter it again, but it wasn't in Ebay's system, it was in their's.
